We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Michelle Pennington. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Michelle below.
Michelle, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
The Sea Moss Boss was initially created in 2015 by family patriarch Kaseem Pennington. His idea was to share sea moss with friends, family, and neighbors and educate his community on the health benefits of sea moss. At the time his children were too young to help in what would become the family business, but in the summer of 2020, during the height of COVID-19, his children who were older by then, were able to assist and began helping their father spread ‘the sea moss love’ in and around the Charlotte area. Today, siblings Paulette (15) Christopher (13), and Holland (9) are the driving force behind The Sea Moss Boss. This sibling group loves sea moss because they understand the enormous health benefit of consistently taking sea moss which is categorized as a superfood. The siblings learned how to prepare, market, and ultimately mass produce large amounts of sea moss in a variety of methods. They saw the need for people to be educated on what this wonderful plant could provide our human bodies, especially given the climate with health and wellness being at the forefront of every news story. The siblings began speaking at events, vending their sea moss products, and connecting with the general public, not just family, friends and neighbors. They were so well received, and they enjoyed so much contributing to their community that they began to spend most of their free time engaging in sea moss activities, everything from conceptualizing new products to establishing relationships with other business organizations in Charlotte. To our knowledge, The Sea Moss Boss is the only youth owned sea moss business in the country. Their goal is to become the leading sea moss retailer in the Carolinas and southeast.

Michelle, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The Sea Moss Boss, LLC is owned by siblings Paulette (15), Christopher (13), and Holland (9). Initially created by their father, now passed to them, the bosses enthusiastically make a line of yummy, organic, vegan, and all natural sea moss infused products including smoothies, sea moss gel-o, raw wild crafted sea moss, sea moss lemongrass soap, freeze dried sea moss pop-ables, and their signature sea moss lemon-aid. And no, that’s not a typo. Sea Moss Lemon-Aid is the healthy lemonade and is spelled as such on purpose. Lemon-Aid is the bodies internal band-aid, it heals from within offering our customers a familiar tasty vehicle to get all the nutrients not found in traditional lemonade. All of their sea moss products are healthy, taste good and are good for you! Sea Moss is an algae grown in ocean waters naturally found in and around the Caribbean Islands. Sea Moss is loosely classified as a superfood as it contains 92 vitamins and minerals our human bodies need to be healthy and strong. The reason their products are so successful is because there is a need in the community for affordable accessible solutions to what people suffer from on a daily basis. Because the food we intake is highly manipulated, many of the vitamins and minerals get striped before consumption. Those vitamins and minerals are essential to our survival and if not found in food must be found another way. Sea moss meets that need! In one serving per day, sea moss can replenish what our bodies so desperately need from our diminishing food supply. Many of our health ailments stem from an abundance of mucus found in the body. Sea moss is a natural remedy for cutting and draining mucus restoring the body to an improved state of being.

We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
Yes, we manufacture our products and we use additional resources. Because our primary product is food and beverage based we had to source bottles, labels, fruit, sea moss, and other ingredients along with containers and other necessities to support our pop-up shop. We use a local vendors for our labels, and supplies such as our uniforms, table cloths, banners, and other marketing materials for our in person events. So far we’ve learned how to shop around and get the best price for our supplies, we’ve learned more about our main ingredient, sea moss, and we’ve learned how many people do not know about sea moss and its benefits so we like to educate our customers.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
We started our business with an investment from our parents and as our business grew we began paying back our parents and now the business is fully ours and is paid for.
