Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Michelle Ngome. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Michelle, appreciate you joining us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I hope I will be known for creating community, collaboration, and inclusivity.
In 2019, I started the African American Marketing Association (AAMA) in order for Black marketers to have a place to obtain resources and opportunities within the community. On the other end of this mission, companies are interested in hiring qualified talent.
Michelle, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I look at diversity and inclusion from a marketing perspective.
As a marketer with 15 years of experience, I began to see how there was a lack or misrepresentation in marketing and advertising. In 2019 I began to pivot my consulting business to help organizations create more inclusive marketing campaigns. Eventually, I took DEI courses at Cornell and the University of South Florida to help me with frameworks.
One aspect that I love about my work is the personal and professional transformation that my clients receive at the end of the project.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
When I started my business in 2013 it was purely on the basis of networking. I was an active member in several organizations and serving as a leader heighten my visibility. It hasn’t been easy but a lot of my work has been built on referral. I have pivoted my business several times, but I have managed to stick within marketing.
The top three factors that helped me build my reputation were social media, podcasting, and speaking gigs. It can be challenging but creating enough content to promote on social media allowed me to stay top of mind among my network. Podcasting helped me grow my network on a larger scale, national and even internationally. Having conversations with people from all over the world that I was able to learn from and apply principles to my business. Last, speaking helps with visibility and creates content for social media.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process./
Currently, I am working on a DEI card game. It is a lot of work, so many moving pieces to consider from graphic design to domestic to international creation and packaging. I haven’t landed on a manufacturer yet, as I’m still collecting sample products and boxes from companies. With cards, it is about size and quantity. Once you select a manufacturer you may want to stick with them because of size, quantity, and quality.
My goal with DEI is to make the conversation interactive and ever-flowing. I do believe my product will provide new value within the industry. Check out BeInclusive.co.
