We were lucky to catch up with Michelle Mercier recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelle, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
On paper, I’m a Business Growth Consultant, Podcast Host and Motivational Speaker but my mission runs substantially deeper than just those titles.
In 2016, after over fifteen years of working for nationally acclaimed nonprofits and large corporations, I made the bold decision to build my dream business. I had no idea I’d be doing it while raising two amazing but medically complicated and neurodivergent children, managing debt up to my eyeballs, and handling three life-changing diagnoses of my own.
It hasn’t been an easy road, but I’ve seen firsthand the power of building skills and processes, turning failure into a fire starter, and embracing self care as a business strategy. I’ve built a business I’m proud of while showing up for my family and myself. And my mission has become to help others do the same.
I want to help other mom/entrepreneurs build a future that balances the act of entrepreneurship, motherhood, and staying afloat and fulfilled through it all.
Michelle, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I began my professional journey by getting my undergraduate degree in Theater and Music from Salve Regina University. I spent the years following performing in many different venues…from small theaters to stadiums. These were some of the best years of my life where I learned valuable skills such as how to engage an audience, read a room, storytelling and much more.
I completed my graduate degree in Arts Administration (aka how to run a non-profit organization). This valuable degree taught me business fundamentals such as financial management, leadership, law, etc. I like to equate it to an MBA for the non-profit sector. I also had the privilege of working with incredible non-profits such as The Huntington Theater and Shakespeare on the Common. I had a front row seat to many brilliant business and arts minds. I also gained a solid understanding of how the arts could be a substantial economic driver within a community.
After some years working int he non-profit space, I decided to take a different path and stepped into the corporate world. I spent almost a decade working for enterprise level corporations such as PayPal & eBay. I ran high level tech teams in the marketing & operations realm. My roles enabled me to learn how to effectively lead international teams, streamline processes and increase the bottom line. I also learned a wealth of technical knowledge around coding, product development and much more.
In 2016, I decided to start my own business in order to more align with the life that I wanted to create for myself and my family. Over the past 7 years, I’ve become an international best selling author, top ranked podcast host (The Resilient Entrepreneur), sought after speaker, Dare to Lead Professional and well renowned Business Growth Consultant. I’ve been extremely fortunate to be able to combine all the incredible skills I’ve learned over the years into one profession. I especially love the fact that I get to use all that I’ve learned in my career to support others in creating a life and business that works for THEM.
Today, I primarily work with female entrepreneurs to help them create time and money freedom by scaling a business they love.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I built my business alongside raising two medically complicated and neurodivergent children. Our family dealt with a litany of challenges for my children including aspiration, heart challenges, seizures, a compromised immune system, p.a.n.d.a.s, adhd, autism and much more. Building my business while supporting my children has taught me to treat life’s challenges as speed bumps instead of roadblocks. No matter what…JUST KEEP GOING. It might mean you go slower than anticipated but forward movement is always best.
Also, I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing so many amazing entrepreneurs on my podcast, The Resilient Entrepreneur. They’ve all shared their incredible stories of resilience and I’ve been able to learn from them all. Those conversations gave me hope and strength all throughout the pandemic. I definitely recommend you give it a listen if you’re looking for words of wisdom!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
The number one thing I tell people about “helping build a reputation” is to always be giving in support of those around you. I’ve made it a goal to do my best to support those I meet along the way, as well as help everyone feel seen and heard. I’m also a HUGE proponent of keeping your word and walking through life with a high level of integrity. I do my best to never commit to something if I can’t deliver my best work in that task. I believe that all of these things combined has led to my having a good reputation within my market.
