Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Michelle Medrano. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Michelle, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
When I was growing up my parents made a big effort to support my artistic endeavors. They put me in voice lessons, art classes, and dance. I realized pretty quickly that I wanted to pursue visual art. After I graduated FSU with an art degree, I think my parent started to worry a little bit. Naturally, a path in the arts doesn’t guarantee financial security, especially the entrepreneurial path I decided to take. I think a big thing that changed their minds, was my determination to create my own business as an artist. It has definitely helped to have their support. Being an artist and creating your own business can be emotionally daunting at times, and it makes a big difference to have a solid foundation. People who believe in you and are there cheering you on.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is smeesh. I am an artist living in Atlanta, GA. I specialize in mural work. I got my start painting murals in Tallahassee, FL. My art is a mix of cheery and vicious. I paint a lot of characters in a graphic style and with bright and bold colors. I like to create spaces that are fun and exciting. That’s probably a big reason I love painting murals so much. I am also currently showcasing more art in a gallery setting, in Atlanta.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I used to get anxiety about posting everyday. You scroll through social media, and there’s so much going on, it can feel overwhelming sometimes. I think a big thing I had to learn was that quality is better than quantity. I don’t post much, and that works for me. I’ve decided to focus on the quality of my posts, and make sure it is the type of art I want people to see. With that, I also want to be consistent with my style, and make sure I continue getting hired for that style.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love that people can connect with the artwork. The characters that I paint are usually reflections of emotions I’m feeling or situations I’m going through. I think personifying these cute and creepy creatures makes it more approachable for people to also feel the experience.
