We were lucky to catch up with Michelle Lewis recently and have shared our conversation below.

Michelle , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about one of the craziest things you’ve experienced in your journey so far.

As you might imagine, working as a professional Witch comes with some wild & crazy stories! What you might not expect is that the really weird stuff happens much less often than you think.

Sure, the majority of my clients bring some interesting spirit guides when we sit down for a tarot reading or an energy healing session. Usually it’s a guardian Angel, departed loved one(s), and/or an animal spirit. These guides are most often friendly, caring, helpful and even quite funny.

Sometimes the client has the energy of something a great deal more powerful with them. This is especially true if they’ve been working closely with any deities, Fae, or elemental entities, and that’s when things can get weird.

One time I was working with a client who was having a hell of a time getting free from an ex-lover. She had already done all of the mundane tasks of leaving him, breaking things off, and making it clear that the relationship was over.

The tricky part was that they still worked together at the same job. Because they were in physical proximity for work, he felt entitled to keep contacting her with non work related matters.

She asked me to perform a cord cutting ritual for her. We began the ritual, which involved the use of candles, sacred herbs, cleansing smoke and fire.

As the smoke began to rise, I could see an energetic hook appear in the back of her neck attached to a thin black rope, held by what can only be described as a ghoulish creature. Its body was twisted and tall.

My client’s eyes remained closed throughout the ritual as she spoke to her ex, releasing all of the hurt he had put her through in their time together. I held space for her and kept observing the creature.

When she was ready, I guided her to slowly open her eyes and verbally banish him from her by name. As she was doing this, the cord between the candles caught fire, freeing hers from his. The creature behind her shrieked, and the black rope vanished, along with the energetic hook in my client’s neck. And the weirdest thing of all, in that same moment a HUGE insect materialized on the table in front of us, some type of exotic hornet that even doesn’t exist in our area.

“That’s got to be HIM!” my client said. “Okay, what do you want to do with him?” I asked her. “I’m ready to let him go,” she replied, calm and resolved.

I turned my empty coffee cup over and covered the insect with it until we could complete the ritual. We finished and I walked my client out of the office. She was lighter, brighter, and free.

After she left, I gathered my wits and took the Phantom hornet outside to release it into a bush. Thankfully it didn’t sting me, but it did bite my finger pretty badly. Definitely not a typical day for me!

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?

I don’t have a ginormous following on social media, and I think that’s actually OK. I am definitely not everyone’s cup of tea and that’s also OK.

I’ve only been “out of the (broom) closet” for a few years, and the vulnerability of it has taken some getting used to. It has been helpful to find my community, to connect with other magickal creators and vibe with them. Acceptance breeds reputation.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?

Honestly, it’s been lots of trial and error. No one way makes sense for everyone all of the time, but the common thread throughout building my business has been to keep putting myself in front of people. Folks that need you will never find you until you let them know where you are.
