We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michelle Lane a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Michelle thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
As I was growing up, we always had a pile of records to listen to. Yes, the vinyl kind. I can remember coming home from school and listening to rock music for hours. My favorite bands back then were Kiss and Styx, but I was also deeply enamored by The Carpenters and Jim Croce. By the time I was in middle school, I knew I wanted to play an instrument. I was drawn to the drums, but did not want to be stuck at the back of the stage. I wanted to be in front and sing, so I chose the guitar.
Once I started taking lessons at the age of 15, I was hooked. Was I thinking about “pursuing a professional path” in music? Nope. All I knew was that I wanted to be a Rock Star, and play on a stage for thousands of people. I was especially inspired by Ann and Nancy Wilson from the rock band Heart, two women crushing it in the male-dominated world of rock and roll. So I figured I could do it too which started my journey into the rock band life: rehearsing in the garage, gigging, and auditioning more drummers than I can even remember!

Michelle, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I ultimately ended up getting a Bachelor’s Degree in Music, and discovered that I enjoyed teaching. My specialty is helping others have fun on guitar quickly by teaching in a simplified and structured way using the songs they already love. I take complicated musical jargon and break it down into bite-sized pieces, so my students don’t get overwhelmed, and get them started on playing songs quickly.
One of the most fulfilling aspects of being a guitar teacher is seeing that look of pure joy on my students’ faces when they finally “get it” and can play along with one of their favorite songs. It’s also incredibly exciting to see them go on to play in their own bands and perform out in public. Those are my proudest moments.
Whether they are picking up a guitar for the first time, or are a re-learner whose guitar has been gathering dust over the years, I use a personalized approach that ensures they start having fun right away by focusing on their favorite songs and styles.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
As an educator, my primary objective is to continually seek more effective methods of communication and instruction. In addition to offering private guitar lessons, I provide general music education within classroom settings and coach youth rock bands. I consistently strive to deconstruct skills and concepts to make them as accessible and comprehensible as possible for my students.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Absolutely! A few key resources have truly shaped my management and entrepreneurial approach. Brené Brown’s “Dare to Lead” really helped me dig deeper into understanding myself, which has been invaluable in how I lead. When it came to the practical side of my business, Kris Bradley’s online course and podcast “Produce Like A Boss” wasn’t just about improving my production skills; it significantly broadened my understanding of the music industry. And for the financial backbone, Mike Michalowicz’s “Profit First” gave me concrete, effective strategies for ensuring my business stays profitable.
