We were lucky to catch up with Michelle Lambert recently and have shared our conversation below.
Michelle, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I started in music very young, playing the violin at the age of two. By five I was studying classical singing and piano. As soon as I was able to drive I started to gig professionally playing in bands and as a solo artist all over Northern California. That led me to a scholarship at the Berklee School of Music in Boston where I earned a degree in Vocal Performance. From there I moved to Nashville Tennessee where in a few years I established myself as a sought-after musician both for studio and live performances. In 2015, I faced a very difficult decision, I wanted to launch myself as an artist, but for that I would need to leave behind a very established career in Nashville and relocate to Los Angeles. It took a lot of work and a lot of sleepless nights but about 1,500 shows later I can say that this was a risk worth taking.

Michelle, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My story starts in a small town in the hills of Mendocino County in Northern California, that is where I got my start in music. My musical journey took me all over the united states, Europe and Asia. Every part of this path helped mold the artist and person I am today. While touring on the East Coast, ten years out of my home state, I wrote a song called “My California” about the adventures of life on the road and missing home. When the song was released, it was a big success in California and opened doors on the West Coast which led me to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area. My goal is writing songs straight from my heart to the heart of the person that is listening. There is a lot of storytelling, a lot of heartbreak and a fair amount of joy. I hope that sharing these moments with my listeners, I help them face or enjoy each moment of their lives.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
If I could talk to myself at the beginning of this journey, I would tell the naïve girl that the only thing that matters is the connection with your fans. Trust yourself, trust your vision, and listen to your inner voice without hesitation. Don’t listen to experts, don’t follow cookie cutter recipes, don’t look for shortcuts, open yourself to your fans through your work and let the magic happen.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
It’s that moment on stage when I realize that the people in the audience are singing along with every word to a song that I wrote. It’s when I receive a message about how a song helped them through a hard time, or when I hear that a child keeps insisting to hear one of my songs played again and again!!! Pretty much when I realize that my songs are doing what they are supposed to do, touch people.
