We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Michelle Johnson . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Michelle below.
Michelle , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
For many of us, life is stressful and may be a little chaotic at times. I firmly believe that our home can be our sanctuary. A place where we can come to unwind and relax. However, most of us have a busy life and a lot of stuff going on. Sometimes our house can get out of control. When those times happen, we sometimes are lost of where to start to get a handle of the chaos we’ve acquired. I love helping people find their way to create that sanctuary feel in their own home. It might mean downsizing, it might mean new organization methods, and changing some habits. But in the end, I would like someone to feel like they are on top of their home instead of the home on top of them is rewarding.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
So I’m sure many of us have seen that Friends episode where Monica had a secret closet. I was kind of Monica for all intensive purposes. I appeared quite tidy. However, if you open a drawer or a closet door, you would see that I had messes! I remember several years ago a coworker came to work with a book about folding clothes. I completely rolled my eyes at how someone can make money off a book about something so simple. I think I actually made fun of my coworker for buying that book. Flash forward a couple years later I am watching Marie Kondo’s TV show, Tidying up.. I thought why not try some of these things I’m learning from the show. So I went through my house and then decided to get the books as well. I had a friend who said “oh no you’re watching that show, you are going to go crazy”. Three months later, I was attending a training seminar held in LA to be a Kon Mari Consultant and meeting Marie Kondo herself. I enjoyed the process so much I wanted to help others as well.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
There is a whole process to becoming a Kon Mari Consultant. You have to have at least two clients that you are working with to show you know the konmari method. One of the two clients must complete all five steps. After you’ve completed that you are to take a test and then have an interview. During my work with clients to get certified, Covid happened! I had to stop going into my clients homes until we knew what was going on. During that time I started to question if I should continue. If it wasn’t for the clients, I was working with and their encouragement, I probably would not have continued. But they had shown me how much I have helped them in the few months we have been working together. Even though the process took me a year longer than I had planned. I was proud to have finished the whole process! Now I am so excited that I can share what I have learned with others.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
For many inviting someone into their at home is very intimidating and scary. I like to create a comfortable and non-judgmental atmosphere. I also like to include patience because these types of decision making is not easy for most. Creating something that works for each client individually is also important. No two homes are the same and what makes someone comfortable is different from someone else, Knowing how to recognize these things has been helpful for me and my business.
