We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michelle Hollie a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Michelle thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Quality control is a challenge almost every entrepreneur has had to focus on when growing – any advice, stories or insight around how to best ensure quality is maintained as your business scales?
Each company implements standards before the door is open for business. Small business usually starts off small, so things are easier to delegate than major corporations. But at the same time, it may amount to more work with less focus in certain areas. Within my business I remain open to the staff. Making sure that things are available and that they are able to voice their concerns. Quality comes with attention, and effective communication. Knowledgeable staff that execute amazing services. Also maintaining a clean and healthy work environment ensures success with company growth.
Michelle, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

Owner/Operator of Hollie World Barbershop& Salon
As of this year marks my 13th year in Dallas, Tx. The place that I have built my growing empire! I am beyond grateful to have met so many amazing people and have so many amazing experiences. The shop that I currently own has the most amazing staff. They are all so talented and wonderful people. When I initially hire someone the first thing that I tell them, is that I am an active owner. I work within the shop. When people aren’t available to do a service. I gladly take them. Which ensures new clients and walk-ins. I’ve created the most diverse, versatile environment. We offer so many different services that most of the time each client is asking another what service their receiving! Roller sets, haircuts, chemical services, nails, and facials, barber services! The list goes on. Saturday morning age groups range from 90-2! My goal was to ensure that everyone could be serviced in a friendly environment. We cater to every hair type. The proud moment is seeing people get along from all walks of life. Sharing laughs, telling stories and feeling respected!
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth has been the number 1 marketing tool for me. The great thing is that its free! There are so many of my clients that started with them and now has expanded to the entire family. Haircuts are the number one client referral. Its literally a waking advertisement on your head. Also having so many different services in the shop. Clients do often book with different stylist for something. The original stylist may not offer within the shop.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
You have to put yourself out there to grow clientele. Whether its social media or casual meetings. This industry is big to where clients always have options. Being knowledgably aware of changes within the industry. Products are constantly getting rebranded in order to make things easier and more efficient. Quicker techniques are being implemented in order for easier services. You also can advertise within your shop to existing clientele. Definitely a new service that no one else offers. Try running promotions and keeping up with an email list. You can also make more money just by upselling your current clients.
