We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Michelle Hancock. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Michelle below.
Hi Michelle , thanks for joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Everyone’s definition of reaching success varies. To be successful in any area of your life, one must set a goal, stay consistent, be flexible in trying new
things, and be realistic. One lesson I’ve learned is that you can do all things, but not everything at one time. That’s where being realistic comes in. Don’t spread yourself too thin trying to do all the things. Hone in on your strengths, work on your weaknesses
and make sure you have the passion and drive to show up every day. I think it takes realizing that you need to learn from others who may be doing things differently and better than you currently are. Instead of being jealous or threatened, be open to learning
from others. Once you reach that success, pay it forward.
Michelle , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have always been a dreamer and doer since a young age. It’s not surprising that I would later leave my cush job to start my own businesses to be able to
work on my own terms. My background is in special event planning, marketing, and public relations. With a mission to work from home, I launched Modern Mom Life, a lifestyle blog that provides ways to make parenting easier and more fun. I also help small businesses
with their digital marketing needs including influencer management. I am able to switch hats easily and help others reach their marketing goals. I am passionate about marketing and it shows.
There’s never a boring moment in this industry. I am proud of creating content that helps my readers
solve a problem or that helps them feel less alone in motherhood.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Setting boundaries and saying no to things that no longer serve myself or my business has been a huge lesson. It takes practice, but once you get the hang
of it, the process is so freeing. I have more time to focus on things and people that help me grow as a person and business owner.
Have you ever had to pivot?
When the pandemic began, I had just launched a podcast that was doing really well. Then, all of a sudden nobody was in their cars, and moms were stuck at home overseeing virtual learning, housework, and more. The listeners dropped like flies. I decided to give myself some grace, cancel the show and focus on content that helps parents at home. As much as it hit my ego and pride to discontinue the podcast, I gave myself grace and praised myself for giving it a shot. Sometimes we have to be our own cheerleaders and not care what we look like to others. We have to do what is best for ourselves at that time and moment no matter what social norms say. The hustler mentality can be dangerous and I was proud of myself to let go of something that was bringing me stress at that time. Fast forward to the present day, I have a weekly podcast for Modern Mom Life that I couldn’t have pulled off without taking that break and being more intentional.
