We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michelle Falanga a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Michelle, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started as an Actor over 23 years ago…(that is a very interesting story) but I performed in Improv shows and murder mysteries every weekend for over 20 years and also did some commercials as an actor… which led me into Voice Over…. now I am mostly focusing on Voice and much less on acting. I have been full time as a Voice Actor for 11 years. The types of projects I work on the most are mainly short form Voice projects… Commercials, short videos for companies, explainer videos, trailers and conference openers…I also do a lot of faith based as well as inspirational, inspiring, cinematic style projects…anything that makes people feel something is what I am best at. My mission is to affect the world in a positive way…. I have a slogan up in my studio…Your Voice CAN change the world.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist and making a living as a Voice Artist is the freedom of creative control of your business… I choose what I work on and what I wont… I decide what I focus on every single day, when I take time for breaks…I am my own boss and while it can be hard sometimes…it is also one of the greatest gifts to have that flexibility and know I am in charge of my day and my destiny.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Yes… one time I was going through a very dark time and had to get yet another retina surgery on my eyes and I came home and was just in a very broken and vulnerable state after surgery…but I had a job to do so I decided to do it….the amazing part was it was a beautiful video about looking for the light in the darkness in life….it called for a vulnerable and real read…and that is what I gave it…because that is exactly how I felt. The video came out so beautiful and has moved many people who needed to hear that message and it actually won some awards…and to this day, that video still gets me work…people find me from hearing it and want to work with me….finding the beauty in the darkness from that experience…I can see it was meant to be.
