We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Michelle & Evan Schmidt. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Michelle & Evan below.
Michelle & Evan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about how you got your first non-friend, non-family client. Paint the picture for us so we can feel the same excitement you felt on that day.
All through my (Michelle’s) college years in Texas, I had been casually photographing friends and family for different portrait sessions, senior sessions, family sessions, you name it. But it was typically just 1-2 hour sessions – and I dreamed of more. My then-boyfriend Evan and I were doing long-distance, and each time we got together, we would take our cameras to shoot and dream together about what it would look like to build a business together.
Once I entered my senior year, it seemed that everyone was getting engaged left and right (thank you, ring by spring!). Honestly, that jump-started what would become our dream career. I actually photographed the first wedding by myself for a client who found me on Facebook. I was sooo nervous and so giddy at the same time to be photographing a REAL wedding! I definitely got trigger happy and took so many photos that day, spent hours and hours editing everything meticulously, and finally.. hit sent on gallery delivery day! An hour later, I got a text from the bride that they LOVED the photos, so much so that they started referring other clients my way just weeks after!
What started as just a “wedding gig” every now and then quickly turned into a full wedding photography business that my now-husband Evan and I get to do together all the time! While we don’t get quite as nervous for weddings anymore, we still get just as giddy.. weddings are the best!
Michelle & Evan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Michelle & Evan Photography is a husband-and-wife wedding photography team based in the beautiful city of Seattle, Washington.
Our journey into wedding photography began when we discovered the joy and fulfillment in documenting one of the most significant days in a couple’s life—their wedding. Yes, we are one of those wedding vendors who ACTUALLY love weddings :)
As a team, we’ve found that our individual strengths complemented each other, which allows us to provide comprehensive and exciting coverage of wedding events. While we both excel in capturing candid moments and making posing FUN, I (Michelle) have an eye for the fine details and dynamic shots and Evan is so amazing at making grooms feel so at ease – just like hanging out with a buddy!
Our services are centered around wedding photography, but we also offer engagement shoots, anniversary sessions, and elopements, and adventure sessions. We aim to provide a seamless experience for our clients, from the initial consultation to the delivery of their beautifully edited images. We also offer custom wedding albums, prints, and so. much more!
We understand that wedding planning can be overwhelming, which is why we strive to be more than just photographers. We assist our clients in crafting their wedding day timeline to ensure that the day flows smoothly and that we can capture all the important moments without rush. Our goal is to solve the problem of our clients feeling stressed about their wedding photography by providing a calm, organized, and joyful presence on their wedding day.
What sets us apart is our commitment to creating a personal connection with each couple we work with. We believe that understanding our clients’ stories, personalities, and relationships allows us to capture images that are authentic to each couple. Our photography style is a blend of documentary and fine art, aiming to create images that are timeless, romantic, and fun!
We are most proud of the trust that our clients place in us and the heartfelt feedback we receive from them. Knowing that we’ve played a role in preserving their memories is incredibly rewarding.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
Evan and I met in the cafeteria during our first week of college! While eating with a group of friends, we happened to sit across from each other and soon became really good friends! Evan transferred out of that university and moved to Kansas, but it wasn’t long until we realized we liked each other and started a long-distance relationship that went on for 2.5 years. During this time, we had lots of conversations about what it would be like to start a photography business together.. and now that dream has come true!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Beyond the photos, it’s the connections we build with couples that make our work truly rewarding. Being part of such a personal and significant moment in their lives, establishing trust, and delivering images that resonate emotionally is incredibly fulfilling.
