We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michelle Diamond a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Michelle, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
Before I formed Shuffle Furnishings, I owned a commercial painting business. This prepared me in multiple ways for my new adventure. The most important lesson I learned was how to deal with clients. I sometimes see projects in “Shuffle” vision. I can see the results before I even start. So I’m confident in my design process. Clients sometimes struggle to see the end result. So it’s a very slow and balanced dance we begin together.
The other big lesson is it’s ok if a client doesn’t agree with your ideas. It’s an ever greater reward when you finally get an amazing mutually agreed upon result.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started Shuffle Furnishings on an idea. A solution to waste. A beautiful recreation of home furnishings. It all started with an antique armchair that was going to end up in the dump.
Let’s “Shuffle” it. She was turned into a Hollywood legend. Marilyn Monroe in pink, faux fur and leopard. She sold within a day and I was hooked.
Ethical shopping. It’s something we should all strive to do. The earth doesn’t have an unlimited capacity to hold endless waste.
We strive to keep great furniture in use for decades to come generation after generation.
Your home should be filled with things you love, stories, history, and your own individual vibe. We’re here to help in the process.
We recently reupholstered a clients vintage settee. It belonged to his mother and just needed a fun update. Now it has a fun tropical vibe and will be around for years to come. I’m sure the family loves to see that piece of family history everyday.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is having creative control over a project. Having a vision and seeing it come to fruition is a incredible journey I willingly sign up for everyday.
