We recently connected with Michel’le Daniels and have shared our conversation below.
Michel’le , appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
What I think it takes to be successful is just being comfortable with whatever it is you want to do in your life. Being successful is not always about the money. It’s about what makes you happy, waking up knowing you’re happy and stress free living the life you want to live is being successful to me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Im a mother of 3 girls. I been in the entrepreneur field for two years now braiding hair full time. I have an Instagram ( braidsby_chelle_) which is my business page. I’ve been braiding hair on and off since I was a pre teen. I always wanted to do hair and make a career out of it. Just 2 and a half years ago during the COVID situation i was laid off of work which was a factory job. At that moment I felt like it was the right time to step out and make my own business. That’s when I got my llc and started braiding hair. It was rough for the first year of trying to build clientele. I started out doing kids hair first then I slowly shift into doing adults hair. My clientele started growing big and I’ve been doing great. Some days get slow and you don’t make no money. Some days be fast and you make a lot of money. I’ve always felt like giving up because I felt like I wasn’t making enough or none at all, but I kept going and stayed praying on my business. I wasn’t in it just for the money I was braiding hair because this what I love to do. It’s a process and you have to have a lot of patience. I’m glad I didn’t give up. I feel like I put to much work, money, and effort into my business to quit. I’m still learning every day because you just never stop learning being an entrepreneur.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn in the business field is being antisocial. Like you can’t be to anti lol . You definitely have to be social in order to put yourself out there. I’m an antisocial person. I’ve always been this way since a kid. So to be in this field knowing I barely talk was a big challenge for me lol. I notice I lack posting my work on social media because that’s where a lot of people are and that’s how you get your views and become known. I will post once or twice a month and that’s it. I’m learning to be consistent with it and open up more. But it’s a challenge for me because I’m so private lol.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
When I started my business I made sure to get an llc first. I was doing hair out of my home which saved me a lot of money. But then I wanted to have my own space away from home so I moved my business into a suit. I started to build my business credit and applied for business credit cards after a year of building my business credit. I got approved for a credit card and business tradelines. That’s how I buy my supplies I need and I pay it off in a month (which is called a net30).
