We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Micheline Bowman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Micheline below.
Micheline, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
Taking a RISK or as my acronym brain says “Remember I’m Strong…Keep” going, pushing, moving or whatever positive word comes to mind after that “K”! I had to keep telling myself that daily. In 2017 my job was eliminated and after 27 years of employment and being over the age of 50, I had to instantly become a risk taker. I had to figure out what my next step would be. While most people have a career they feel they will retire from, you don’t go into it thinking you will be let go. The possibility is always there if it’s not your company, but for the most part you show up, do an amazing job and the ride the waves of employment.
When I found out my position was being eliminated, reality was real. Timing is never the best when situations arise that are challenging, but time will force you to rise to the occasion. Those words, “We are eliminating your position.” will forever be in my memory, but they aren’t at the forefront of what I do. My position at that company was eliminated, my position in my life wasn’t. All hands on deck for me…Micheline! If I was a gambler in Vegas I’d push all my chips on the table toward me, because I’m guaranteed to WIN! Instantly my mindset changed and I had to take a serious risk and make my next move my best move. It’s not that I didn’t want to work, but what next? I now had the opportunity to do something else, or create something designed specifically for me in my next career journey so I did. I sat still and thought about my skills, the plus and the minus side of things because we all have things we are good at and things we still need to learn. I took time to soul search and figure out what was next. Sometimes I felt I knew and other days, I felt defeated but the word “RISK” Remember I’m Strong…Keep believing in yourself Micheline…you got this and God’s got you! I started my own Media Relations Company, Bowman Media Group, LLC. I blend my love for working with others to help them gain media exposure with my passion to do more things that help me become more visible in hosting, emceeing, and speaking etc.
Micheline, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My backstory in a nutshell…I believe as a child you feel that fire that ignites and gives you a glimpse into what you were born to do. I knew mine was centered around words and talking as I love both. Writing poetry, lyrics, songs, speeches, as well as speaking and hosting events have forever been my niché.
I graduated from Morgan State University in 1988 with a degree in Telecommunications (Broadcast/Journalism) and a commitment to myself that I was going to make a mark in whatever opportunities life presented. I landed my first job in television in Washington, D.C. and that literally laid the path for me to not only learn, but as I learned, I grew more confident and was able to offer my ideas, and thoughts to help create segments and platforms for the company.
Over my 27 years in television, my accomplishments read like a book and I’m very proud of the firsts I helped create at the station, and the countless first opportunities I secured for people to be on television. One of the most important things I’ve learned in life and during my career is to never compromise who you are for what you do. I never used my status working in television to make it seem I was any better than anyone. My personality and character spoke volumes because I was the same Micheline at work and outside of work. People will remember how you treat them.
After my position ended at the tv station, I started my own business… I gained the opportunity to help others to have media exposure on any television, radio, print, and podcasts platforms. So that is the biggest WIN that keeps me going. I did it…I’m still doing it and my reputation follows me forward. My motto for my brand, “Are You Ready To Be Seen?” I work with a variety of businesses, people and brands who have a platform and want media exposure.
My personal brand accomplishments are in being asked to host and emceeing amazing events in the area where I live. I love being on stage and engaging crowds. I am also a Skincare Ambassador for I KNOW Skincare, Tourism Ambassador for Experience Prince George’s, and Luxury Handbag Ambassador for Nila Bags.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
As an entrepreneur, I believe you have to truly believe your journey is designed for you. Yes there are many people that may be doing what you do, but they can’t do it like you do. My resilience has been and continues to be tested and challenged. COVID was a huge challenge. 2018 I just started making a mark doing media placements for entertainment venues and various companies, and then everything shutdown in 2020 and continued for a few years. No concerts, no plays, no events, no travel, no anything that involved groups and people for me to service. Now what? I was forced to pivot and figure out my what next. The next what became… I could book Zoom interviews, radio interviews….things that still kept my clients being seen and their stories heard. That was also a moment I had to rely on savings and faith that this too shall pass. I still had to stay positive in the midst of a world where thousands were getting sick and dying daily. I had to stay in touch with the people in the industries I wanted to serve just to check in. When you are out of touch, someone else is getting in touch and I didn’t want that to happen.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Your character speaks volumes and when people speak about me to others, I want their first impression of me to be a lasting impression. I live my life being true to myself and to others. My name is different so when you meet me, you will remember that Micheline got it done! People who’ve met me once and we randomly reconnect years later will always receive the same professionalism and positive energy from me.
