We recently connected with Michele Tompkins and have shared our conversation below.
Michele, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
My bohemian approach to food has always been my view to help bridge the gap of racism. Since the beginning of time food has always brought individuals together as a way to fellowship. I pride my work in the kitchen to bring various cultures together knocking down racial barriers in society. Applying traditional ingredients from one culture to the next demonstrates synergy of flavors bringing cultures together….ultimately bringing people together. Regardless of your origin, food is a common denominator across the world. Although we are different from culture to culture if you take a birds eye view to the dining table across the world in many instances food repeats itself. Dishes may take on a different name or vary with ingredients used or vary in preparation to represent each respective culture however at the foundation be considered the same dish. Food tells a story! The style of Roots & Culture is to always curate boutique culinary experiences that do just that.
Michele, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started in the culinary industry over 20 years ago. I went from a personal chef business to a catering company, to a full service restaurant, to now a private chef. It has been a path of lots of hard work, blood, sweat, and, many tears. The culinary industry unfortunately, is an industry that is underestimated. Being an entrepreneur has been the most rewarding accomplishment and more often than not the most challenging. I am most passionate about what I do and work hard to exude that passion through food. Through my gifted hands I pass on my energy in everything I prepare with love. I am most proud to manifest each career goal in what I call the ultimate foodie roller coaster. What a joy to customize, curate, create, travel, prepare, learn, educate, and make bellies smile.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My Bohemian style of cooking is my approach to bring cultures together. I take pride in always blending traditional ingredients used in soul food dishes and using in global cuisines. It helps to demonstrate bridging the gap of racism. We are all unique individuals, food brings us together in the most simple yet beautiful way.
