We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Michele Nichols. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Michele below.
Alright, Michele thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I’ve always had a passion for performing, whether it’s acting or singing. I learned through a combination of formal training and on-the-job experience. I studied music, theater and film in college and continue to take classes. Working with talented casts and crews on projects like 42, Vice Principals, The Righteous Gemstones, and The Inspectors taught me so much about the craft of acting. Singing came more organically, but studying voice in college helped refine my technique. Working with bands as well as in musical theatre and opera has helped refine my stage presence and learn how to work with tech on stage. Doing backup vocals in studio settings for other artists has helped me learn new skills about recording. I think I could have sought out more mentors early on and taken more risks in networking. Building connections with people already established in the industry could have given me insights I had to learn the hard way. Early in my career my husband was active duty military. Moving every few years for the first 8 years of my career proved challenging, but also taught me the value of collaboration and making my own opportunities.

Michele , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
About Me I’m an actress, singer, and creative professional passionate about storytelling in all its forms. My journey into the entertainment industry began with a deep love for performing, whether it was on stage or in front of the camera. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working on projects like Vice Principals, The Inspectors, and The Righteous Gemstones.
What I Provide
As an actress, I try to bring authenticity and depth to the characters I portray, striving to connect with audiences on an emotional level. I aim to provide meaningful stories and performances that inspire, entertain, and provoke thought.
What Problems I Solve
I come prepared, but I believe in Semper Gumby. Always flexible. Each set and performance comes with its own set of challenges and I’m a part of a whole. No one is an island on set so collaboration is key.
What Sets Me Apart
I have expressive eyes. Everything reads on my face which is great for film & stage but terrible in any other work environment so I’m committed to making this thing work.
What I’m Most Proud Of
I’m incredibly proud of the work myself and my film tribe have made together. We have made several short films since the pandemic. Instead of waiting around for the phone to ring we made it happen.
What I Want Fans and Potential Clients to Know
I want people to know that I’m passionate, hardworking, and committed to creating work that makes an impact. Whether you’re watching me in a film or hearing me sing I bring my whole self to the table because I love this craft.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Yes, several books have had a profound impact on my thinking and philosophy, especially as it pertains to my work as an actress and singer.
“Quitter” by Jon Acuff – This book really spoke to me during the early stages of my career. Acuff’s advice on how to pursue your dream job while maintaining a stable income and balancing responsibilities was a game-changer. It gave me the courage to slowly transition into my full-time creative career and reminded me that it’s okay to take small, calculated steps rather than making drastic changes all at once. The book gave me confidence in my journey and taught me the importance of being patient while still taking consistent action.
“The Purpose Driven Life” by Rick Warren – This book had a deep impact on my mindset, especially in understanding that my work as an artist is part of a bigger purpose. It helped me see my craft as a calling, not just a job. It reinforced the idea of using my talents and platform for a higher purpose, whether through influencing others, giving back, or contributing to meaningful conversations through my art. This perspective has given me the resilience to keep pushing forward, even during difficult times in the entertainment industry.
“What Color Is Your Parachute?” by Richard N. Bolles – Although typically seen as a career book, this book really helped me focus on my strengths and passions within my field. It taught me to assess my skills and align my career decisions with what truly excites and motivates me. As an actress and singer, I found it valuable in navigating not just auditions and performances, but also understanding how to build a fulfilling career that aligns with my core values and aspirations in the entertainment industry.
These books have provided me with valuable insights on perseverance, purpose, and self-awareness, which I constantly apply in my creative career. They’ve helped me stay grounded while striving for success, and I feel they’ve been integral to my personal and professional growth as an artist.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
The journey is rarely linear. It’s not always about going from one success to the next, but about learning from setbacks, refining your craft, and finding the strength to keep going despite challenges. Non-creatives might struggle to understand that resilience is just as important as talent in this field. It’s not just about the end result, but about the growth and perseverance along the way.
