We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michel Ramirez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Michel, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
One of the biggest risks I’ve taken in the past few years would be leaving my “9-5” job and transition fully into tattooing.
This decision was a difficult one to make, more than anything because I was leaving financial stability behind for my passion. it was something that I was brewing in my head for months before actually taking the leap. I consulted with my family and friends, but in the end I needed to listen to myself. This was something I have been wanting to do for many years and I now had the opportunity to pursuit it full time.
One morning in mid December of ’22 I woke up, got ready for my shift and throughout that whole time in my head I kept going back and forth with the thought of maybe waiting until next year when the timing was better. As I sat in the living room drinking some coffee, I made up my mind. I couldn’t wait for the perfect timing to happen. I went to my job and I quit on the spot. I knew that by doing this I was going to stop having financial stability, but I didn’t care I just wanted to do what I love.
A big weight was taken off my shoulders and now it was time to focus on myself and my passion.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Michel Ramirez, I am a self taught tattoo artist from Leon, Gto, Mexico. I have been tattooing professionally for 2 years and I’ve been learning for a total of 7 years. I found an interest in this craft since I was in high school and when I moved back to Mexico after graduating I bought my first machine and started learning more in depth about it. 5 years later, I started working at a private studio and been growing and improving. I specialize in black and gray illustrative realism. I enjoy designing pieces that will enhance the body part it goes on and will stand the test of time.
The one thing I am most proud of is the trust I have built with my clients. The fact that people are interested in my art/work is a dream come true. I make sure to exceed expectations every single time because of that. I’m always growing and learning and the next tattoo will be better than the last.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I get to live my childhood passion. That for me is the most rewarding aspect of being an artist. As a child I always spent my time drawing and that bled throughout the rest of my life, so being able to fulfill that as an adult is super rewarding.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The main goal I have is to get to a point in my career where I can travel all over the world and tattoo everyone that has an interest in my work. I’m constantly learning new things to improve my skills throughout this journey which will allow me to reach that goal.
