We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michal Petros a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Michal, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
Sometimes I wish I had started my creative journey earlier. Had the pandemic not turned my life upside down, I probably would have. But after being quarantined overseas for three months and then repatriated to NYC, I needed time to process the shock and adjust before I could think about creating for the internet.
Looking back, it would’ve been amazing to document that journey, but I’m glad I went through that process privately. Those experiences shaped me in ways that prepared me for everything that’s come since. Transitioning from nonprofit to corporate challenged me to think differently and step into uncomfortable situations, which ultimately helped me grow.
I’m especially thankful that 22-year-old me decided to stick it out in NYC. This city has pushed me to my limits, taught me so much about myself, and given me the space to grow my craft while building a thriving corporate career. My journey hasn’t been conventional, but I’ve learned to appreciate the path I’m on and the resilience it’s instilled in me.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a NYC-based photographer and content creator with a passion for storytelling, culture, and personal development. My journey into this creative space was far from linear. I grew up traveling across Europe, Asia, and Africa, which gave me a global perspective and a deep appreciation for diverse narratives. After working in the nonprofit sector, I transitioned to a corporate social responsibility role, where I’ve managed impactful programs and built relationships with organizations making real change. But my love for creative expression—particularly through photography—has always been a constant thread in my life.
What sets me apart is my ability to blend my global upbringing, professional experience, and personal vision into meaningful work. I’m not just about aesthetics—I aim to create pieces that inspire understanding, reflection, and dialogue. For instance, my recent HABESHA project explores the intersection of language and identity within Eritrean and Ethiopian communities, using photography, interviews, and media collages to foster empathy and connection.
I’m most proud of the resilience and adaptability I’ve cultivated along the way. Whether it was being quarantined overseas during the pandemic, moving to NYC alone with no job, or transitioning across industries, each challenge has shaped me into someone who isn’t afraid to step out of her comfort zone. This mindset has not only fueled my personal growth but also allowed me to serve my clients and community with intention and creativity.
If there’s one thing I want people to know about my work, it’s that it’s deeply rooted in authenticity and purpose. Whether I’m behind the camera or crafting content for social media, my goal is always to tell stories that matter and to inspire others to embrace their own journeys. My brand is a reflection of my values: creativity, resilience, and a desire to make a meaningful impact in the world.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn perfectionism. The beauty of art lies in its freedom—there’s no single definition of ‘perfect.’ With photography, you’re co-creating with the universe, capturing moments that are fleeting and raw. It’s a powerful practice of presence, gratitude, and surrendering to the magic of what is.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being a photographer is the ability to create and find self-expression in a medium that’s also recording history. Every frame is a moment captured, a story told, and a legacy preserved.
