Michal, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.

Using the term super connector is something that really distinguishes myself from the industry as a whole. Even prior to my career as a matchmaker, I always had this natural power for bringing people together, fostering connections in various social settings whether it be for a dinner or to introduce two people that I think could be friends. I see myself as a social node, always seeking win-win situations by connecting people who can mutually benefit from knowing each other. My brand goes beyond the conventional notion of inserting dates; it emphasizes the power of creating meaningful connections.

At Michal Matches, I offer a unique program designed to empower individuals by connecting them with their inner strength, their inner power. The Super Connector program often serves as an initial investment in self-discovery and personal growth for my clients. Through an integrated approach deeply focusing on both their inner and outer beauty, clients are guided to enhance their self-awareness, ultimately preparing them for the dating journey. This process has become almost a crucial prerequisite before they embark on matchmaking. The problem I am really solving for my clients is how to get out of their own way, and do the work on themselves so that they can show up to authentically be themselves. They are guided to overcome self-limiting barriers, allowing them to understand themselves and at the core what would make a solid match for life partnership. This deeper self-awareness goes beyond surface interests, ensuring a meaningful connection based on compatibility rather than superficial preferences, such as liking pickleball.

Back in 2017, I found myself yearning for the flexibility my husband enjoyed with his remote job. Despite vigorous online searches for a career change, I was hitting dead ends. Frustrated, I shared my plight with a friend, a s*x therapist, who decided to lend a hand in the search. I have no idea what she typed into the search bar, but within .3 seconds, the title ‘matchmaker’ appeared on the screen. She exclaimed, ‘This is what you should be doing.’ It felt like a moment of kismet, as if the universe had placed my true calling in my lap. Overwhelmed with the realization, I pursued this path relentlessly, sending them 50 emails before they finally hired me. For me, matchmaking is truly magical.

I am really proud to share a recent success story involving an individual that was relationally inexperienced. Recognizing the need for deeper specialized support, I connected him with the right type of s*x therapist. Witnessing his journey from that point to recently getting engaged has been incredibly fulfilling. While I didn’t directly make the match with his future wife, I provided the crucial professional connection that guided him towards a meaningful relationship. The satisfaction of preparing him for a journey that culminated in walking down the aisle feels almost greater than making a match for a mere date.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?

Like many, the pandemic marked a pivotal moment in my career. Initially, I believed matchmaking was at a standstill. At that time I was working for a national company and sought inspiration from my friend Danielle Selber, a fellow matchmaker in the Jewish community who embraced virtual dating experiences. This motivated me to create curated virtual speed dating events. Soon, Danielle and I joined forces, collaborating to navigate this new virtual landscape. This period of uncertainty became an opportunity for innovation, with virtual dating experiences becoming a captivating new playground. Embracing my core value of always being in the sandbox— where everything is always a playground when it comes to matchmaking. I love curating experiences in person or virtual so I started to have a lot of fun with it. This eventually led me to establish my own boutique matchmaking company.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?

I had to unlearn the belief that the only path to a successful career is through a traditional salaried position. I used to think that validation and approval from a boss were essential. However, I’ve come to realize that the intrinsic value of my work speaks for itself. I no longer require external validation; the proof is in the pudding.
