Alright, Michai thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Taking a risk, is scary. Not only is it scary but it also brings on anxiety. Taking a risk was going into business for myself. I was fired from my last job as someone’s employee and didn’t look for a replacement. Instead I dove straight into my “part-time” and grew it into the business I have now. BLCK Label wasn’t birthed overnight however its the biggest risk I’ve taken in life besides becoming a mother.
The thing about business is that, you’re responsible for your bills and your business bills. To know that if you don’t make any money your life will begin to reflect that. That’s a pretty big risk if you ask me.

I am Michai Ashley, owner and founder of BLCK Label Aesthetics Studio. I created BLCK Label to give a healthy environment for women & men of color through their skin care journey while rebuilding confidence. After working in other chain “beauty” businesses I realized what was missing. I became an esthetician because I struggled with acne through high school and my adult years. I’ve mastered the craft or nutrition plus skin care treatments & home care to give my clients the results they desire.
I always tell me clients i am giving you progress not perfection because nothing in life is perfect. I love seeing my client’s skin transition and also watch them glow & smile when they talk about the compliments they receive or how their skin was perfect on a big day for them. That alone gives me so much joy.
Your skin care journey is an ongoing journey. There will be good days and bad days. However, know that you’ll get through every single day.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty through email, text messaging, honoring my clients, and also during the holidays I give gifts out online.
I love giving back to my clients. I am huge on brand loyalty and creating a brand that my clients can engage with and also relate to.
So Instagram is a great way to get a quick message across to my clients & Google is a great way to showcase my business and brand.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My journey has been a battle since I started. However, the most challenging time I had was 2021. Being a solopreneur everything is on you; marketing, managing, service providing, and etc.
I became a mom in 2021, however I had to close my business down from June – September. Even though it doesn’t seem like a long time, to close down during one of my busiest seasons was a struggle.
However, here I am today bounced back with healthy twin boys and a thriving business. A year later I am making more money than I was making the year I had to leave.
