We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michaela Robinson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Michaela, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
Looking back, I would have started my business years sooner than my actual launch date. I developed an interest in candle-making and decided to start a candle business back in 2017, after coming across an article on the dangers of some synthetically fragranced candles/plug-ins. It wasn’t until the end of 2019, that I decided to actually pursue it.
Fear can truly be our worst enemy. Knowing now that the best teacher is experience, I would not have taken two years stressing over having it all figured out. We can educate ourselves as much as possible about the industry we want to pursue, and of course, it’s extremely important to research and understand that industry. But the real lessons come with putting yourself out there. That’s when you receive feedback from those who matter the most. Your customers and supporters.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been a candle lover for as long as I can remember. In 2017, I discovered an article on the dangers of some mass-produced synthetically fragranced candles. This sparked my passion for non-toxic candles and candle-making in general. It took me until 2019 to gain the courage to start my candle business.
Throughout the years, with the help of my supporters, I’ve been able to offer affordable, non-toxic, luxury candles, freshening sprays, and candle accessories.
I enjoy being able to provide my customers with luxury items without the luxury price tag.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my customer base is simply listening. Listening to what my customers loved, what they would like more of, and what they didn’t care too much for. Building a bond with my supporters and keeping that open communication with them, is how receive continuous support and loyalty from my customers.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe my desire to educate my customers on how to maximize the use of their candles is what helped build my reputation. Since the beginning, I’ve always advocated for candle safety and candle care as well. That allows candle lovers to get the most out of their purchases.
When we spend our hard-earned money on a product, we want to get as much out of it as possible. It has never been simply about a sale for me. My customer’s experience is most important and I believe they recognize that.
