Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Michaela Farkasovska. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Michaela, thanks for joining us today. Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?
Yes, I absolutely take vacations, and I’ve found that stepping away from my business is not just a luxury—it’s a necessity. As a designer and business owner, I’ve learned that creativity doesn’t thrive under constant pressure. To spark new ideas and stay inspired, I need to step away from the creative process entirely and immerse myself in other activities. Travel, outdoor sports, and spending time in the mountains allow me to recharge and reconnect with what inspires me most.
I love skiing, hiking, and mountain biking in the mountains. These activities give me the chance to reconnect with nature, de-stress, and gain fresh perspectives. As for keeping the business running while I’m away, planning is key. I make sure my workflows are organized, set clear expectations with clients, and automate what I can. For entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away, I’d say: trust your systems and give yourself permission to rest. Time away isn’t a setback—it’s an investment in your creativity, focus, and overall well-being.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I launched my jewelry business in 2016, marking a significant career shift from the corporate world, where I spent eight years working in information security. My journey to becoming an entrepreneur and fine jewelry designer wasn’t a straight path—it required a lot of soul searching and listening to my inner voice. It wasn’t easy stepping away from a traditional career, especially when family and colleagues had their own opinions and expectations. But ultimately, I trusted my instincts and followed my passion. Today, I feel incredibly grateful to have made that leap and found a fulfilling career that allows me to create and share my art.
What I offer is more than just jewelry—it’s heirlooms filled with meaning and memories. I specialize in fine jewelry and custom designs that are built to last for generations. Each piece is carefully hand-finished in my studio in Sandy, Utah, with meticulous attention to detail. My goal is to design jewelry that captures core memories and emotions, creating pieces that tell a story and hold deep significance for the wearer. Whether it’s a custom engagement ring or a meaningful anniversary gift, I strive to weave personal stories into each design, making the experience as unique and special as the person who wears it.
What sets my work apart is the intention and care I put into every piece. For me, success isn’t just about financial goals—it’s about staying creative and passionate, designing pieces that inspire both myself and my clients. I take pride in creating designs that spark conversations and help people celebrate their most cherished memories. My brand is built on connection, meaning, and craftsmanship, and I want my clients to feel that in every piece I make.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy I’ve found for growing my clientele is deeply rooted in nurturing lasting relationships. For me, success in the jewelry business isn’t just about gaining new customers—it’s about fostering meaningful connections with those who have already trusted my work. I truly believe in the power of “Relationships, Relationships, Relationships.” Building trust and loyalty with my existing clients has been the cornerstone of my business, and I’ve found it to be far more impactful than simply chasing new leads or focusing on quick sales.
I make it a priority to engage with my customers in a thoughtful and personal way. I strive to show my clients that they’re valued as individuals, not just customers. Even small gestures, like reaching out during the holidays or offering personalized tokens of appreciation, make a big difference. By focusing on these meaningful interactions, I’ve been able to build a loyal client base that not only returns for more but also helps spread the word about my work. For me, it’s about creating a community around my designs, one relationship at a time.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was the idea that lowering prices and offering frequent discounts would drive more sales. Like many business owners, I initially believed that making my jewelry more affordable would attract more customers, but the reality turned out to be quite the opposite. Not only did it fail to generate the results I was hoping for, but it also created several unexpected challenges.
First, I realized that lowering prices devalued my work and led to questions about the perceived quality and markups. Fine jewelry is about craftsmanship, uniqueness, and meaning—none of which align with a “bargain” mentality. Discounting also tended to attract customers who were primarily focused on price and often asked for even deeper discounts, waiting for the next sale instead of appreciating the artistry and value of my pieces. On top of that, it overwhelmed me with low-cost orders that left me feeling stuck and unmotivated, pulling my focus away from creating meaningful designs.
What I learned instead was to be intentional about pricing and to enhance the customer experience in ways that align with the value of my work. Offering a single, thoughtfully planned annual sale and focusing on meaningful gestures—like personal touches and exceptional service—helped me strike the right balance. This approach not only preserved the integrity of my brand but also allowed me to connect with customers who truly value my craftsmanship.
