We recently connected with Michael Wright and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My mission is to make known local musicians everywhere, beginning in the greater Austin area. But a mission has to have a purpose. A foundation strong enough to prevent the daily trials and tribulations from distracting one and leading them down a different path. Year two, for me, was about discovering that purpose.
Several times in year two of this adventure, music came to my aid and soothed the problems troubling me. I am constantly in awe of the talent within these amazing people we call musicians. Watching them perform and overcome inspires me. I soon realized my purpose: To serve as a daily reminder, to all musicians, that their importance to everyone’s life is understood and appreciated.
So I work hard to take the best photographs.
Michael, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
An amazing capture of a musician is how this adventure began. Two years later and I am still hooked. I never set out to solve problems. I never and still do not have that as a service I offer. But I continue to realize that the displaying of my photographs is making known not only the variety of music available on any given day but the venues that host the bands and the musicians that play.
I try to get out at least three nights a week to photograph, new to me, musicians and then post them on a variety of social media. I make these photographs freely available for their own social media posting. Each year, I publish a book to highlight the year. My second book will be released in late October or the first of November.
I have come a long way in my photography. I am proud of the fact that my photos are sharper and the composition is better, allowing me to present uniquely a shared experience. Seven Pillars Photography will be the ‘go-to’ for concert photography.
I will eventually be branching out to studio photography.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I have a day job. My photography is done in addition. The uploading, viewing, and editing of photographs are done in the gaps of time that present themselves. I am also building a website, working on a book, and performing daily activities of normal living, e.g. dishes, taking out the trash, and yard work. Somehow, I manage to find time to wind down.
I am devoted to making my photography adventure a success. I would like for it to become a source of income so I am taking steps of forming a business and strategizing to make ‘what I do’ unique and important to the music lovers of this country.
Music is a vital ingredient of healthy living. Musicians are physicians. I firmly believe this. Their songs are the prescriptions we take. What prescription we take depends upon where we go. My job, as a photographer, is to make known to the populace, all the locations, and all the musicians so they can make an informed decision.
What illustrates my resilience? My dogged determination and the expenditure of my precious time and money to make what some would say is a hobby into an organization designed to capture, display and preserve these moments of time that I believe are historic.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
Non Fungible Tokens are of interest to me. Art is no longer confined to a wall. Digital images can be viewed and enjoyed anywhere. We can take them with us. So how does one say a digital image is unique, one of a kind when it can be easily copied? NFT’s have attached to them a unique identifier. I am not well versed so I will not say anymore but it is intriguing. I recently read about a digital image that sold for millions of dollars via an online auction and was paid for by bitcoins.
Yes, NFT’s are of interest.
