We were lucky to catch up with Michael Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Well, first of all success comes in different forms for everyone. You have to determine what success is for you or else you’ll be chasing someone else’s definition of success and end up unhappy because it wasn’t meant for you. When I first began Dj-ing I looked at other Dj’s and I started chasing what I saw others do. I felt the need to prove something. I eventually got to a point that I started to determine what I wanted and what made me feel complete.
In order to be successful you have to be committed and consistent to your craft. As a Dj, every time I step in front of a crowd my musical selections, transitions, enthusiasm, professionalism all have to be on point. The key is to be consistent. Do not do it just on high end gigs or days when you feel your best. People remember you and you never know who you may be talking to. Always remain humble. Nobody wants to work with a jerk.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am Mike Williams of DJ316 Weddings, Events, and Karaoke. I was born and raised in Memphis. TN. I am a multi-genre mixing veteran Dj of 20 years. I love creating the perfect vibe for events and take my task seriously. I want my client to have a great time.
I started Dj-ing in the mid 2000’s. I always listened to radio and club Dj mixes and I grew an appreciation for the art. Eventually I started emulating what they did with whatever equipment I could afford at the time. I started off Dj-ing parties with a desktop computer. The old ones with the big back monitor. Thankfully I eventually made enough from my first couple of gigs to purchase a laptop and equipment.
I am very proud to see how far I have come as a Dj. My foundation of having an ear for music and understanding song structure helps me to be the best Dj I can be. There is no type of event that I am unable to do. Any genre of music, any vibe I can mix and create the perfect soundtrack to your event.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
My best source for new clients has been my old clients. I take advantage of opportunities. I go out of my way to make the best and most professional impression possible. For example, I did a birthday party a few years back and from that one party, I have done dozens of other events and parties. That school connected me with two other schools. The parents from the PTA have hired me for their children’s parties. I have also done a few parties for the parents and friends as well. Professionalism and humility goes a long way. I am always early for an event. The music is started 10-15 minutes before the event starts if allowed. If there are any issues that I had control over, I apologize. I am always gracious to my clients, because I appreciate them. The people you serve are the best source of new opportunities. People remember you. If you are pleasant, they will want to work with you again or at least recommend you to someone that can use your service.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding experience of being a Dj has been the journey. I remember where I started and although I feel like I have a long way to go, I am happy to say that I am no longer where I was. I have enjoyed meeting new people and celebrating life on many different occasions. I have been able to see some places that may not have been if I was not a Dj. One of my prayers coming into this year was for me to travel more as a Dj. I was blessed with an opportunity to do so this past spring and have been in and out of town doing corporate events all summer and early fall. The journey and opportunities that I have had to experience life has been a blessing.
