We were lucky to catch up with Michael Tyler-smith recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, MIchael thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of our favorite things to hear about is stories around the nicest thing someone has done for someone else – what’s the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?
My Nikon broke back in June and I was fixing to go on my second business trip to Miami. The day my camera broke, three people offered their camera and allowed me to use their camera while I get the job done in Miami.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am inspired by emotions and the overall impact I face in my own day to day personal life. I think something I am coming to understand about me is… I truly do not understand how to process feelings when it comes to handling certain situations. I feel like sometimes life can be a movie which is why I enjoy going to the movies, its like my therapeutic escape sessions. Movies is the one place where you are allowed to get lost without dealing with the outside world. I have always been inspired by movies and enjoying those shared moments when I am able to spend it with family. I feel like its something that allows me to process my mental mind frame to become inspired to bring my own mind to life. I am not normal and I feel that I was blessed with a gift that I sometimes fear. Fear of what I truly can accomplished and how one day I can aim to inspire the next generation to embrace their talents. To me when I edit a picture I can imagine a story being unfolded into my eyes and with every picture its a guided story being told through these still visuals.
As a young artist growing up, I always had a dreamer’s mind; a voice that was silent but working quietly in the dark. As a young man, I envisioned “The Melanin Experience” to be so many things but it always came down to Black / Melanin Excellence.
“The Melanin Experience” is a story that is told by the viewers (you!). When you look at my work I want you to envision the beauty / the pain / the bold and allow yourself to get creative with a story. I welcome you to my world and hope you enjoy the creative field I want to share with you.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think something I enjoy about this journey is the challenges this comes with. Getting feedback about how people feel about their experience and just seeing how they feel after working with me.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the most rewarding things about being an artist is just how well I have inspired myself to keep going. Being able to unfold the puzzle when thinking about new concepts for photoshoots and actually bringing them to life.
