Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Michael Sutton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Michael, thanks for joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I spent 43 years of my life in Detroit Michigan…..born and raised……in 2016 I took a leap of faith….hopped on a greyhound bus with $500….a backpack…..and a suitcase….headed for Houston Texas…..I only knew one person in Houston…….7 years later I can say this has been the best decision of my life…..inspiring myself to do better and treat myself better….make better decisions with my life because there was no way on earth I was moving back to Detroit!

Michael, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a professional DJ……I got my start in djn at a time when I was laid off from my job…..my cousin owned an after hour night spot in southwest Detroit…..I wanted to hear some of the music on my phone so I plugged into their system…..and from then on I was designated to play music when I was there…..this began my love for the art form itself! That’s when I fell in love with dj’n! I wanted to learn how to dj in the right way! I wanted to learn how to scratch and beat juggle…..my dreams were owning turntables…..and that’s what I use primarily at this time! I’m also into music production……I have a beat placement on the monumental hip hop album The SoundTrack To The Revolution…..Out together by SmackWater and Music Monopoly……song titled B**** We Still Here……it’s an album which reflects the times we living in when the George Floyd incident happened……Its a proud moment for my career! I’m in a production company called Gated Beats with my partner 55 Mr Taylor……that’s my brother right there! As far as DJ’n in a full fledge hip hop dj……I seek the clients who have a love for all music like myself! I love to take a client’s event on a stroll and have fun doing it! I’m also a student in the legendary DJ Rob Swift’s dj school…..I’m getting so much better with my understanding of the art form which should make my future clients joyful to have me play their event!

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I have a lot of ambition…….being that I’m from Detroit and moved to Houston with absolutely nothing…..I just got out and moved around to meet people…..and especially djs……so I rode the bus one day…..I had no idea where I was going…..while the bus was at a red light…..I just happened to look up and notice this sign…..
MEGA DJ CENTER…..
I got my butt off that bus at the next stop…..walked down there…..explained where I was from and that got me connected with DJ Gonz……I couldn’t have asked for a better dj mentor in Houston especially not knowing anyone……
Gotta have some ambition and some go get it! You don’t know what you are missing! That day I didn’t miss! And I have a relationship with Mega Dj as well…..i but dj gear…..they have events and scratch sessions…..networking events…..Mega DJ is the ish!

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Current clients refer me as a dj all the time…..I really love my repeat clients! I also have some really cool friends who refer me as well! Having good energy with people has been my best source!
