We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Michael Sublett. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Michael below.
Hi Michael, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I bought my first dslr camera eight years ago when I was diagnosed with complex post traumatic stress from a career as an emergency medical services worker. Photography was suggested to me, because of my background as a writer and musician, as a fitting new outlet for creativity and to bring joy back in to my life. As I explored this new outlet I learned I could tell stories through my photos. I spent the first few years going through the usual photography and video consumer projects but now am mainly focused on creating and producing original content.
Working outside of the usual path in to photography allows me to bring in staff who wish to enter in to this art through non traditional methods. Training and educating new recruits was a huge part of my former career, and I’ve transferred that passion to my business. We also have an amazing internship program open to anyone who wants to learn and is willing to dive in.
All of this is the background to our mission statement to produce quality content in an inclusive environment.
Michael, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
There is a lot in my past work that I am very proud of. However, what I am most proud of is our inclusive environment and our dedication to creating an open and educational environment for our staff. I am also proud of our commitment to customer satisfaction. And I am proud that we have moved away from commercial content to producing original content. This is given myself a creative opportunity but has also given creative opportunities to my staff.
My past collaborations included working with music studios to produce music videos for their artists as well as talent shoots, working with the local sports clubs and charities to provide photography services, working with local magazines to provide food beauty shots to accompany food reviews, and working with music venues to photograph live performances from national and international acts, and festival photography
We are now more focused on original content. We are currently in production on two episodic series focusing on Kansas City. We are also working on original short films and documentaries. Promotional videos and teasers for our two series, Paranormal-X and UnCoverKC are already released and available on our social media sites.
What sets us apart from other production companies is our inclusivity, educational environment, and our unique vision and talents. What sets us apart is what we are most excited about: Our original content. These stories are amazing and we can not wait for the world to see them. Even if we moved our company back in to the consumer realm our product would be original, and unique. That is what we do.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My partner and I are life long creators. We’ve had to push our dreams back due to being single parents. We both needed to give a spirit of stability to our children. Now, at an older age, our children are raised to adulthood and we have given ourselves permission to chase our dreams full throttle.
Our goal is freedom from the daily script. We want to live creating. We want to entertain and educate and release our stories to the world.
We want to transport our viewers to our world. We want to give them a rollercoaster of a story and have them say “My God. That was a great ride!” When they are done watching.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I love sharing my creation. There is nothing like sharing your content and having people not only tell you the content was great, but that it was thought provoking, moving, and pushed them to challenge their own view on the topic we present.
UnCoverKC is a documentary series focusing on stigmatized communities in the Kansas City area. We are currently in post production for episode 1 and in production for episode 2. After each shoot the members of the community we are filming thanks us for giving them a voice when no one else will. This is huge for us and makes every long day of shooting and long night of editing more than worth it.
