Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Michael Seib. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Michael, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
My parents knew I was creative very early because I had no interest in coloring books drawn by someone else. I always wanted a blank page to draw my own figures, to be colored or not. I drew planes, cars, monsters and weapons, filling huge books of coding paper turned inside out from my Dad’s work. I believe I have talent from both sides as my Dad Pete drew with clean lines and spatial awareness and my great-grandmother Opal was an accomplished oil painter. I can remember sitting outside with her as a five-year-old and asking her to draw a deer. I can still see the doe she drew and thinking “I won’t ever be able to do that!” A couple years later, everybody in my class was supposed to draw a portrait of a president. When I drew Lincoln my teacher started laughing, initially hurting my feelings. Then she took it and showed it to her teaching assistant and taped it up on the chalkboard, cackling along the way.
This gave me confidence that carries to this day. I know that if I focus and work hard, great stuff will come out.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been drawing since I can remember and over the last ten years integrated acrylic paint, photography and graphic software to realize my visions. As a journalist and managing editor for a small newspaper in California, I designed ads, websites and social media pages, learning the technical skills it would require to take my personal art to another level. My strength is in originality and boldness. I take it as a compliment if someone is a little disturbed by my work.
My current style is what I call Sivorca: vivid dreamscapes without a focal or moral center. I like my art (and music) to have an element of mystery. I strive to represent order and chaos simultaneously whether a piece is purely abstract or representational.
I offer a new vision of reality with strong accent pieces that are relatively inexpensive for their size.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My holy grail would be to be considered one of the great artists in American history during my lifetime. . Given the rapidity of technological advancement I want to utilize all the tools available to create a style truly new and unique. I will continue to grow and get better so I can be more prosperous and have more time for art.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I owe all of my recent success and a new life to my decision to quit drinking alcohol about a year ago. It was a fun thing that turned into a full-time job and now I have time to focus and create! I gain traction and capitalize on opportunities rather than squandering them.
