We were lucky to catch up with Michael Overlie recently and have shared our conversation below.
Michael, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
Until the death of my brother in 2017, I wasn’t able to see how I was showing up in the world. After his death and my deep grieving of his passing, I was opened up to new potential and possibilities. We are all capable of being so much more, and not in a manner of just societal success. At our core, we are all amazing and powerful.
Michael, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have spent most of my life trying to help others. Trying to save others. For decades this came from a place of lack and insecurity. After my brother’s death, I was shown other possibilities. I am a Healer, Author and Coach. I know who I am in the deepest sense. Now. I am conscious. I am awake. I entered the coaching space as a way to help others learn a different set of skills to heal their long-buried wounds.
Most of us don’t realize how the stories of our lives shape the way we show up, for ourselves and those around us. All of these can be brought into the open, healed and released. This is not an easy process however. The willingness to get into your core wounds and grow through them is needed. A level of commitment is necessary that you may not have known existed.
What I love the most about what I do is knowing that someone is once again deeply connected to his or her self. The big Self, not the little egoic self. What is possible from this place is limitless. Animals can help us get there and in my case dogs are the real magicians.
Imagine if you will, a life so fluid and full of ease that nothing can shake you.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
The most powerful books I have read are by Thich Nhat Hahn and Neal Donald Walsh. Deeply spiritual in nature they also provide awareness of the depth of us all. How we are all connected. How everything is connected. If everyone were able to realize how we are all one, this world would be a different place indeed.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Training and knowledge are wonderful in learning more about what it is you want or are trying to do. Way more powerful than that is the ability to be open and curious. If you think one way of doing something is the only way, you have already limited yourself. If you think you are the smartest person in the room, then you never will be. The more I learn in this world, the more I realize I don’t know much. This level of awareness brings peace, openness, and the ability to constantly recreate myself. There is always someone smarter, but nobody knows you like you. Be you. Be open.
