We recently connected with Michael O’Rear and have shared our conversation below.
Michael, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
One of the biggest things I learned when pursuing my craft is– actually pursuing it. Nobody knows how to do something before they start it. So I threw myself into the deep end and followed my dreams. Things will never be perfect, especially when you first start. If you don’t look back and laugh at yourself, you started too late.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I have always loved podcasts. Whatever hobbies or interests I had, I would find a podcast associated with it. If I just watched a movie, I wanted to hear people talk about it. The more I listened, the more desire I had to talk. I am very much a go-getter, so I started reaching out to my favorite podcasters and asking how I could become a contributor. Even if it was a massive podcast and my odds were slim to zero. But I had to try. Unfortunately, I never heard back so my next best option was to start for myself from the ground up. I wanted to build a community of people to share and talk about their love for Marvel and Star Wars. I am proud to say, while it is still small, it is very whole. I was able to accomplish my goals, and anything that comes after is just the cherry on top.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I have taken a “shotgun” approach to social media. Meaning, I didn’t want to leave any options untouched. I wanted to be on every platform and doing every type of content possible. Which includes Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Hive, and more. Discoverability is so important, so be seen everywhere. Any bit of advice I received, I just layered it on top without dropping any of the other habits I built up. I have found the most success in Instagram by doing daily posts and weekly reels to reach as many people as possible. I also do polls and questions on my story to keep people engaged and chatting with me. And, of course, a lot of relevant hashtags. I think social media is one of the most powerful tools at our disposal. There is a community for everything and everyone. You just have to put in the work to engross yourself in it.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I think the pinnacle of my journey in content creation is making it my full time job. But there is no pressure on that as i love this as a hobby. Being able to support myself with my passion is just a bonus. I try to tell everyone in my life to find what they love, hustle for it, and you will find pure happiness through every step. Even if, somehow, you stumble along the way, at least it was a fun stumble.
