We were lucky to catch up with Michael Myers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Michael, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
My family and I love to go to fairs and festivals. My wife and I have done this since we started dating, and back then, it was just the two of us, so finding something for us both to eat at one spot was easy. After adding two kids to the mix, finding food for all four of us to enjoy (especially something the kids would eat) became a little more complicated, which meant standing in multiple lines, which could become time consuming. I have always loved cooking and watching people enjoy food that I have made, fills me with complete joy. One day my wife and I were having a conversation about possibly starting our own Food Truck a few years down the road. We wanted it to be all inclusive and family friendly, meaning there would be something that everyone could get, without having to stand in multiple lines. A one stop shop if you will. We wanted to incorporate the Puerto Rican food I grew up making with my Aunt Carol, as well as the typical American type foods, but also kids meals. A change in my job resulted in my Food Truck dream starting more quickly that we had anticipated, however, God has truly blessed us in this new endeavor.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Michael Myers (not THAT Michael Myers) but most people call me Mike or when I’m working in the Food Truck, Big Mike. I’m tall and I enjoy delicious food, which is where the BIG in Big Mike’s comes from. In my younger years, I went to culinary school, however, I left school to join the trades and work in the masonry business with my Grandfather. I have always enjoyed cooking. Whether it was for myself, family, friends or church family, cooking has always been in my bones. My Food Truck is different in that we sell “Big Mike’s Monster Bowls” and kids meals. Everything that I make is truly made with love, because cooking for others is what I love to do.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My business partner is my wife, Catherine. We met back in March of 2014 and we were married on December 13, 2014 (when you know, you know!). My wife stays behind the scenes and handles all of our social media posts, creates our weekly calendars, and does the booking for all of our events.

Have you ever had to pivot?
Maybe this answers the question and maybe it doesn’t, but in March of 2024 the company I worked for made some changes to how we were going to be compensated versus how many hours we needed to work. Essentially this was a pay cut for me, as I was going to have to work much longer hours to make the same amount of compensation. It was during that time that my wife and I decided that we were going to purchase our first food truck. I reached out to a couple of different Food Truck vendors and decided on a company that was based out of Texas, but had a presence here in Indiana. The salesperson I dealt with over promised and under delivered. We were told our trailer would be ready the end of June, so I quit my job at the end of May, 2024, in hopes of getting everything ready to go by the very beginning of July. The salesperson ended up leaving the company and we were told that our trailer was not actually going to be ready until the last week in July, with our first event being held on August 10, 2024. Not only had we missed all of the events that we could have been at in July, we also did not plan accordingly for a whole month of solely relying on my wife’s income. The bills were coming in, and we had no way to pay them. It was a stressful time for both of us, and it took months for us to finally catch back up, once we officially got the trailer up and running.
