Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Michael Montague. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Michael thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
When it comes to making music now that we have a following, we want to release as much as we can for our amazing supporters. However, something that has been very important to us is making quality or quantity. It’d be less risky to make another album that you might expect to hear from HumorUs and immediately tour, but instead we’ve found a way of creating that is completely different than what we have done in the past. And over the past two years, we’ve been creating our new sound – sculpting our most important, honest, and intense record yet. But to capture our experiences in songs, it takes time. We’ve been giving ourselves the space we need to heal through music, not just make it.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
HumorUs was created with my three greatest friends back when we were on the verge of becoming young adults. Tyler, Owen, Canyon, and I started making music really just for the fun of a new outlet together, combined with our inspiration we got from each other. We definitely started songwriting with a goal to find answers to our problems, but five years later, we have been creating for the sake of validating our own pain and fears, rather than desperately trying to make it all okay. We’ve learned that some of the most powerful music we can make comes from when we are most honest and vulnerable with ourselves first. Not forcing answers, but instead coming to terms with our own imperfection and suffering together.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Around the release of our debut album ‘Loading, Please Wait…’ back in 2022, we began working on the next project as a band. We made around 50 songs and demos, naively thinking we might easily make the next project. However, life had other plans. Relationships fell out, people we once trusted turned into people we will never become, finances and jobs were lost, sickness grew, and death became more real than we had ever known before. We were pushed past our limits, and our hearts broke over and over again. Now we have another story to tell. We have a new purpose in music, another necessary but evil chapter to expose for exactly what it is. This has been the most difficult record to make, but the most proud we have ever been. We can’t wait for you to experience it with us.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Through the past two years being especially challenging in every aspect, I am just forever grateful for my three best friends. All of us work day jobs until something takes off, and as challenging as it has been, I’m constantly inspired by their drive and perseverance. The band, our careers, just doesn’t mean what it does without our friendship. I think we’ve needed each other more than ever before, and no matter what life throws our way, I am blessed have Owen, Canyon, and Tyler in my life. That inspiration won’t run dry.
