We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michael McDermott a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Michael, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?

You can only force yourself to do something that you hate for so long before you inevitably begin to do it poorly. You can only do something poorly repeatedly for so long before you begin to hate yourself. You can only hate yourself for so long before you begin to erode the parts of yourself that you once deemed worthy of love.

So, find something that you are willing to sacrifice for and then make a full attempt to get good at it.

Michael McDermott is the lead singer and guitarist of the band Red Medicine.

It all began for him when his pre-school teacher told him that he was a terrible singer and thus began his long spiteful journey to prove that hag wrong.

After one night of playing upstairs at the Hard Times Cafe in Old Town Alexandria a tall, kind, older man with knobby knees and cargo shorts came up to him and asked if he’d like to record at his studio. Unbeknownst to Michael this man was Don Zientara. This encouraged him to pursue his lifelong dream of telling that old hag Linda Vinderhausen to suck it.

Michael continues to provide mediocre Blues, Garage Rock and Americana music to all who will listen.
