We were lucky to catch up with Michael Lasser recently and have shared our conversation below.
Michael, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
A great legacy can extend far beyond the family. The opportunities a properly executed business with great products, excellent customer service, and a strong company culture can present is huge!
I have a new found passion for business and the rush I get from helping customers with all the services we offer. Kindness goes a long way and we have met some incredible people so far. The blue collar industry is a honest and vitally necessary path that I am fortunate to have grown up in. I dream of building a company that men and women are proud to work for and have the opportunities to provide a good living for their family and themselves. It all starts with top shelf customer service, clear communication, and a solid product. I truly believe we have delivered this so far and I guarantee we will continue to do so for years to come! To me, leaving a company that people love to work for, and feeds/houses thousands of families so that they can create their own dreams is a win at the end of my days.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was raised by an amazing woman who did everything she could for myself and my siblings. I am fortunate to have brothers and sisters who mean the world to me. After high school, I worked in many areas of construction from jobs like being a glazier to a heavy equipment operator. I am beginning to find out that a huge percentage of the entrepreneur/business owner crowd was once a bartender and I am no exception. A right of passage I suppose. I later obtained a degree in criminal Justice and pursued a career in law enforcement. My workforce experience has been nothing short of incredible and I am so thankful for all of the experiences. At the back of my mind, I always craved to be a business owner and do more.
Hard times came in 2020 and work was very unstable. During a financial crisis, I took the leap and decided to launch Glass Monkey. I would love to say we were an immediate success, unfortunately, that is not how it happened. It has been 3 years now of constant grind and growth. There has been nothing easy about this but I feel I have a purpose now. I know what the next few steps are and I know the man I want to be. I know the legacy I want to leave behind, and that is a very fulfilling feeling.
One thing I am thankful for is the fact that life has not always been easy. The good times are so much sweeter because of it. Age is teaching me to live in the moment and be appreciate the journey.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
It took years for me to take reading seriously after high school. I now love to read and find peace in leaning from the experiences of others. A few books that come to mind and I believe everyone should read are as follows:
How a Man Thinketh
5 Languages of appreciation in the workplace
The power of one more
How to wind friends & Influence people
These are some great books but it is honestly hard to name just a few that have changed my life. I tend to gather a few small notes and clips from each book. I write in my books and take notes. I enjoy going back months later to look at my notes and reflect on how I was feeling at the time.
I enjoy learning from many different minds and hearing many different opinions. I have never prescribed to the idea that anything must be done one way and one way only. My advice is to take in as much information as possible, keep what is useful, mindfully discard what is merely a lesson in life. Some things are not meant to stay.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
This one is easy but people refuse to put the time in to do it or accept it as truth.
1) Buy your inspiration a cup of coffee
2) listen/learn
3) ask for nothing!
4) how can you help them?
5) repeat
The second thing is to understand that consistency alone is not enough. We must be consistently doing the right things.
