We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Michael Kummer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Michael below.
Michael, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear from you about what you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry and why it matters.
In my industry, Corporate America is all about selling people quick and easy fixes. But in the vast majority of cases, these “fixes” are worthless, because to improve your diet, fitness or overall wellness, you have to make meaningful lifestyle changes that you can sustain over time. This is where, as an independent and family-run business, we try to be different from our much larger competitors; instead of just saying whatever we need to say to sell as much as possible, we actually care about our customers and obsess over how to help them live better, healthier lives. We don’t just care about sales, but also about outcomes.
That’s why we’re very honest about the fact that products like our beef liver capsules and other organ meat supplements are not miracle cures. Yes, we strongly believe that our products can help you optimize your diet and cover nutritional gaps. But they cannot serve as a substitute for a nutrient-dense, species appropriate diet paired with a lifestyle that has sufficient amounts of sun, movement and sleep.
So, we view our products as an opportunity to teach people about healthy living, and we use the educational content on our blog, video and social channels as a way to help people find our products and integrate them into the overall framework of a healthy lifestyle.
We talk about this fundamental concept all the time: if you want to be healthier and live a long, active life that’s free of metabolic disease, you have to be willing to put in the work today. Corporate America will tell you there are shortcuts, and they’ll gladly take your money — whether they’re selling you highly-processed “health foods,” pharmaceuticals, fad diets or fancy (expensive) workout regimens. But it’s just not true. There are hacks and tools that you can leverage, but they will never be the whole solution.
Michael, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m the founder of MK Supplements, a family-run company that sells high-quality organ meat supplements from 100% pasture-raised cattle, with more natural, animal-based products planned for the future. Our mission is to help people feel their best by optimizing their diet and filling nutritional gaps. And since launching in the summer of 2021, we’ve served tens of thousands of customers all over the world.
I’m also the principal writer behind the health and wellness blog MichaelKummer.com (along with its accompanying video and social media channels), where my team and I publish educational content about biohacking, fitness, nutrition and more. We’ve covered everything from how to cure irritable bowel syndrome to how to increase your HRV (which is a key indicator of your overall health).
One of the things that makes us different from many of our competitors is that we take our responsibility to research the topics we write about very, very seriously. Our content is rigorously researched and contains links to high-quality scientific studies. And when we review products, we gather as much first-hand testing experience as possible before going to press. We also regularly circle back to our reviews and update them based on our continued experience with a product.
Similarly, our supplements are all third-party tested to ensure purity. And we pay attention to small but important details, like using glass bottles instead of plastic. (Plastic bottles can leach endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and they’re much worse for the environment than glass.)
Our followers and customers appreciate this overarching commitment to quality and accuracy, as demonstrated by the outstanding year-over-year growth in every segment of our business.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
In a word? Honesty. Our customers know they can trust us because we have a long history — starting with the blog and YouTube channel — of sharing accurate, thoroughly-researched information. When it comes to our physical products (i.e., our supplements), we’re fully transparent about our manufacturing process (we even make it easy to find our third-party lab reports), and we tell the truth about what benefits a person may or may not get from using them. This is a stark contrast when compared to our competitors, many of whom lean into fantastic claims and gimmicky marketing schemes.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I now have more than 45,000 subscribers on YouTube and more than 18,000 followers on Instagram. And the one piece of advice I have is to remember that social media needs to be personal to be effective. Your followers want to see a real picture of who you are and learn how you integrate the topics you talk about into your own everyday life. If you’re thinking of social media as primarily a way to announce new content, products or features, you’re starting with the wrong approach. Social media is an opportunity for you to have a conversation with people and build relationships. If you do that, you can mix in more promotional content because your followers will legitimately care about your projects.
