We recently connected with Michael Kelsey and have shared our conversation below.
Michael, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Going after your dream and not letting anyone taint your vision. I’ve moved from Philadelphia and drove across the country to Los Angeles it took about a week I had no job no housing just faith and vision. I believed in myself and took a the risk left a good job to achieve my dreams. My purpose will always come first I still didn’t achieve my full goal but I’m closer to it everyday and I work on it every single day.
Michael, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is RudeBoyKels I come from Norristown Pennsylvania a small town 15 minutes away from Philadelphia. I grew up playing sports and loving music and poetry. I’m a first generation born here from Jamaica. I’ve been making music for 8 years with a total of 7 projects and 40 singles. What separates me from others is I put the art first and I realize that it’s bigger then me and I understand the influence I bring to kids. One of proudest moments is the love my city gives me and how far they seen me come. My goal is to one day perform for the superbowl halftime show and the Lincoln financial field.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The feeling that I give people whether they are going through happy or sad times and how my music can help them through that by expressing themselves. I feel great when I come up with things that surprise me. The fact that I can come up with an idea in thin ear and put words and a melody to it and people singing to is just so amazing to me. I love music and the art of it. It’s so universal you don’t even have to know the language of a song and you’ll still dance/ tap your feet to it. I’ve seen autistic kids dance to music and it just shows how much joy you can bring into people lives.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The best way to provide support is just spreading love and sharing our music to your friends and coming to our shows. Another way is to inspire others the way my music inspires people. I speak on ambition and love and I feel like people think being in love his tacky so I’m doing what I can to make love sound cool again like it did in 90s and 2000s R&b. And In the terms of ambition I’m speaking on Jay Z , Diddy , as far as branding and building ownership and how they influenced people like Rick Ross.
