We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michael Kelly a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Michael thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
My move from New Jersey to Texas.
Back in 2011 is when I gave my life to Christ. When i got saved, i asked God for the faith of Abraham. That’s when my journey started. One day in church I heard God say to me “I want you to write for me” so I began writing plays. I wanted to get in the industry a little more, so I began my acting career as well. From 2013-2015 I’ve worked with celebs like Nick Cannon, Theo Rossi and even Sage The Gemini. I directed and produced my first play also in 2015 as well. God shared with me he wanted me to move to Texas. Without hesitation I just looked for apartments and made my way. Since then I have written, directed and produced five plays and I have written three books.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
The vision for me writing is to teach and share the gospel with others. I love helping and encouraging people and the best way for me to do so is by writing plays, movies, books etc. In this world, there are many things that distract us and tries to keep us down, and through my writing I love to encourage and uplift people by letting them know we can still make it with help from God and each other.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
A pivotal point in my life was back in 2020. My job had cut my pay in half and this play I’ve been trying to produce and direct kept being blocked/cancelled. I took a step back and ask God, what do you want me to do now? Then the shift came. I met my mentor (Coach Williams) and he showed me something I never knew I had in me. Because of him, I became a basketball coach/trainer. Which is another outlet to help encourage and build character.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
One thing that I believe non-creative’s have a struggle understanding is the risk that we live in every day. Creative’s have to have a different type of Faith. Some things we do, others will definitely think we are crazy and weird, but they sometimes fail to see the big picture because they’re wrapped up in the decision we choose to make.
