We were lucky to catch up with Michael Jordan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Michael, appreciate you joining us today. Is there a heartwarming story from your career that you look back on?
Story#1 A man booked a session with me that had some debilitating back pain. When he came into my office, he was stooped over and it was very difficult for him to walk. He tells me that his daughter’s wedding is the next day. Due to his back pain, he was pretty sure he wasn’t going to be able to walk her down the isle for her wedding.
After our 60 minute session, not only was he able to walk with easy, but he was able to dance out of my office.
Story #2
Another man in his 60’s came in with shoulder pain in both shoulders. He owned his own lumber mill and to save on costs, would do most of the labor himself. This meant lifting heavy logs daily which ended up wrecking both his shoulders. When he came in to see me, his goal was to be able to hold and lift his grandkids. He also wanted to build a crib for his grand babies. After meeting with him for a few sessions, he was able to hold his grandkids and build them a few cribs to sleep in. I can still remember seeing his face light up the first time he was able to pick up his grandkids with any shoulder pain.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a sports massage therapist that specializes in posture and body position. By assessing the body, we identify the muscles that are working too hard, pulling the body out of position. These postural deviations are what cause excess strain and stress on the body. (i.e. one hip higher than the other, one shoulder lower than the other) Once these postural asymmetries are corrected, the body is allowed to move more efficiently; decreasing pain and increasing functionality.
I have an office on Music Row in Nashville as well as work with Vanderbilt University Athletics.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe finding a niche that I’m passionate about is what really helped me build my reputation. That and building up some reviews from past/current clients
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Yes if course! This type of therapy saved me from needing back surgery. While doing through the process of rehabilitating my own back, I found a passion in learning about pain and how it relates to our muscular skeletal systems. I am still learning about the body on a weekly basis, over a decade into practicing.
