Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Michael Jarel. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Michael, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
The idea for the story came from a hypothetical conversation about people of color and reparations. I had the thought that giving people money today would be sort of a like putting a band aid over a laceration. Sure we (black people) would get maybe a piece of land and some money but we would never get back the centuries of knowledge and foundation that was taken away from our ancestors.
What if we were able to go back in time and take a whole generation of people, sit them on solid ground and guide them into the future? What would that look like?
Michael, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Michael Jarel. I am an author, musician, father, and husband. I was born in the early 80’s and raised by a single-parent mother like everyone else I knew at the time. I come from a huge party for anything, always got my cousin’s back, grandma curse you out family.
At every gathering, we all get together and someone always has a story to tell. Personal accounts re-lived and depicted with great detail and enthusiasm; sound effects included. If I had to guess, I would say I get my inspiration to write from these such occasions.
In my writing, I like to create worlds that are familiar and relatable with modern thoughts and fantasies. I believe that the black woman is the strongest entity in the universe, so I love creating these powerful, beautiful and also vulnerable leading black female characters in my art.
My stories are of fictional events that are usually deeper than the surface level conflicts and are left for the reader to interpret the meanings as they see fit and from their perspective.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I think NFTs are great for creators and only going to get bigger and better. With what the Meta is doing as far as creating these digital worlds on overlay, NFTs are going to open up a whole world of art and what it means to be a consumer of art.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
One resource I wish I knew about earlier would be the ability to code and graphic design. Coding and graphic arts abilities are such powerful tools for any form of art. Books need cover art, music needs video and clever marketing, film, digital art etc, all could benefit from having these skills.
