We were lucky to catch up with Michael Hopper recently and have shared our conversation below.
Michael , appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I had done some private events with another vendor when I was living in Southern California. I had planned on moving to Arizona and knew I would be able to start my own mobile bar business there. I always liked the idea of working for myself and trying to figure out how to make my own business successful. My uncle helped me build the mobile bar I currently use, and from that day on I started doing private events.
I knew that there were tons of private events being thrown in Phoenix on a weekly basis. I just wanted to be able to start capturing some of that audience to be able to grow Beer Thirty. From the start I was able to book a lot of really fun events.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was in the Navy for four years. When I got out I still had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I started bartending and quickly found a love for it. I enjoy being amongst all the people that are out having a good time and celebrating. It makes me really excited when I am able to make a drink for a guest and they absolutely love it. Becoming a bartender and starting my own business has opened a lot of doors for me. I have met a lot of connections that have helped me throughout my journey. I believe being in the military set me up for starting my own business. It taught me to be disciplined in my craft and to work hard.
The main thing I want potential clients to know is, when you hire my company we will work harder then anyone else and provide the best service for you and your guests. We pride ourselves on taking your events to the next level and provide each individual with a great experience.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I have my business on the app Thumbtack. However I get quite a few events from guests coming into the restaurant I work at.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I love reading books from different figures in leadership and seeing what works for me. I have taken a lot of different management styles from different authors. Two books that I recommend everyone to read are, Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink and Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara. Both are vastly different from one another, but there are great lessons to be learned in both.
