We recently connected with Michael Hershey and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Michael thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
I’ve always had interest in starting my own business and choosing to commit to that vision is incredibly important. Finding mentorship or coaching in someone that has done what you are trying to do can save you time, stress and money. Knowing what I know now, I would have found a business coach earlier – I spent the first two years trying to do it myself. Once I found a coach, the process was expedited. If you’re thinking about starting your own business, you have to first believe that it can happen and you need to commit to the vision. In the beginning you will have a lot of people cheering for you, in the middle of the grind, cheer for yourself.
Michael , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I grew up with really poor eating habits. I was over weight, unhappy and confused about what I needed to do to lose weight and improve my health. Through a 60lb weight loss journey I found a love for nutrition and health. Becoming a dietitian was something that I knew I wanted to do. I started my own practice and now I get to help people with something I once struggled so much with. Because I once struggled with food and nutrition, I understand the challenges that my clients face and can relate. What differentiates my practice is my ability to bill preventative health insurance benefits. In this case, the overwhelming majority of my patients pay $0 out of pocket to work with me.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
I’d 100% choose the same profession – I love being a Registered Dietitian and being able to have positive impact on peoples lives.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start?
Funding your business can be a challenging and risky move – take calculated risks and know your numbers. Don’t put yourself in a situation that could financially sink you. Keep your current job as long as you can while launching the business to maintain stability.
