We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michael Grier a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Michael, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
The Kindest Thing anyone has ever done for me is when DJ Jammin J took me under his wing and taught me how to become a business man and Dj. I met Dj Jammin J back in 2012 & I can honesty say he changed my life. I met him at a concert he was doing sound for in my hometown. His set up was one I had never seen in my lifetime. I approached him not knowing what was going to come from it. I was strictly focusing on becoming a music artist and growing my fan base at the time. I networked with Dj Jammin J that night & I told him I would call him the next day so we could discuss business. I was so used to rejection that I thought once I followed up with him the next day I would never hear from him again. So I called him the next day & he answered. We had a talk on how could we come together and do business. So we came up with an idea to start throwing parties at a local club in my hometown by using our fanbases to bring people out. We started throwing parties weekly and we would bring hundreds of people out including surrounding counties. I can honesty say he showed me how to make money from doing something I truly love. I started out as the hype man and transitioned into becoming a Dj & it was all because of him. Today we’re more than business partners we’re family now!
Michael, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
After a Four year run with Dj Jammin, I finally moved to Atlanta GA, Where I finally began to slowly invest in myself. I took a risk and purchased my first DJ equipment set. I purchased two 15 inch powered speaker, a 2 channel dj controller, and a Macbook Pro. I then began to play with the virtual dj program for fun at home & I would promote myself on social media while doing it. I remember my barber which is a Dj as well that goes by G Beats asking me to fill in for him one Friday night and Dj at a comedy club that was in Riverdale GA at the time. I was so nervous because I had never done anything like that before, my anxiety was out the roof. I did the event and ended up making a great impression on the owner. He asked me to come back the following week and the week after that. I would record videos and go live on my social media every time I Dj there so my followers could see what I was doing & Eventually my name started to spread like wildfire. I started getting private gigs like Birthday parties, Family Reunions and even Weddings. I knew then I had a future in the Djing business. I began to take it serious and invested in myself more until I built a household name for myself that wouldn’t be denied.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing your clientele is not being afraid to communicate with strangers. 85% of your business will come from people you’ve never met in your life. You have to network your butt off, give out business cards every chance you get whether you’re at the gym, gas pump, in Walmart or even an restaurant. The person you least expect could just be your next client. You never know!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What helped me build my reputation within my market is staying consistent with all my clients. I say that to say this. I honor all my clients with the same service whether you purchase my most expensive package or my least expensive package. My professionalism is top tier and I take care of my clients from the beginning to the end. I show them the upmost respect & stay connected with them through out the entire process.
