Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Michael Freetage. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Michael thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
When my job was cut in mid 2019, I took a few weeks to figure out what I wanted to do next. As I pondered my options finding another 9-5 wasn’t an option so, I started my own confectionary business.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
It started with a passion for sweets since I was a kid, I loved baking with my Mom and Grandma. I always made treats for family, friends and co-workers. When I started making my treats to sell it started with Cinnamon Glazed Nuts then I added my Peanut Butter Fudge that I have been make for over 20 years. My focus is always quality over quantity and that will never change. I would rather take a little longer and do things right and that shows when customers turned friends return often for their beloved treats. I enjoy talking almost as much as I enjoy making my treats.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I started with a small bank balance and a good credit score lol. I used my savings and my good credit to buy some used equipment online and started looking for suppliers for nuts ect. I then started booking events and used my profits to further invest and buy more equipment.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In the beginning stages of startup I was told by many people that I couldn’t make it work, there is too much competition blah blah blah. One step at a time I continued to grow the business then in 2021 my Brother Chris was able to join the business full time. At the end of June will be the beginning of year 4, with many more ahead.
