We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michael Easterling & Jaala Ruffman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Michael & Jaala, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Deltopia is the most meaningful project we have worked on so far. Making our first feature film was a huge accomplishment and then having it distributed by Lionsgate was a such a dream come true. We wrote, directed, produced and edited Deltopia, it was our first script we ever wrote, so making it and then selling it, that is pretty much unheard of.
Michael & Jaala, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We’re a writing/directing duo, that just released our first feature film, Deltopia, distributed by Lionsgate. We run our own production company as well, Talkboy TV.
We produce and direct music videos, commercials and films. We were both directing and producing music videos before we met each other, and then we met and joined forces. We directed many videos for independent artists and helped launch their careers.
We are currently working on several series and feature film projects, while also continuing making music videos and commercials.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being filmmakers, is that we have films we can look back on forever. There is something to show for all your hard work and you can sit down and watch back any film/music video whenever you like. It’s amazing to be able to see the progression of our craft from music videos to feature films.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Our goal from the beginning was always the same, to create original stories with an authentic voice that evokes honest human connection. We have several series and film projects in development and we aim to continue to bring entertaining and thought provoking films to life.
