Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Michael Dotson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Michael, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I started releasing music when I was 24. I often think about how different things would be if I had started if I was maybe 18 or 19. I’ll be 30 in a couple of years and I’m constantly thinking “should I continue this?” Sometimes I feel like I’m past my prime but I cannot see myself doing anything else. I love making music! I often get in my own way whenever I see younger artists become mainstream but I know that everything will happen, it’s only a matter of time! Everyone walks a different path, everyone will arrive at their destination when it’s best for them.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Mikarlo. I sing, dance, write and sometimes produce. I am currently experimenting with different sounds but I’m definitely a pop artist. I’d say that I’m not one to follow trends. I think it’s very important for artists to stay true to themselves and avoid trying to “keep up” with whatever is happening in the world. The music industry is in shambles because nobody is trying anymore. Everyone plays it safe, looks at what’s trending and emulates that. As an creative, it’s heartbreaking to see that we’ve lost the art but I do hope that we meet an artist to shake it up and remind people that you need more than a viral song to be a star!

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The easiest way to support a creative is just to share it! It costs absolutely nothing, takes seconds to do and will allow more people to discover their art!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
There are absolutely no rules when it comes to making music (or releasing it). You can create a song and plan to release however you want! This is your world, do not go based off of other’s actions or success.
