Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Michael & Derek. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Alright, Michael & Derek thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?

Back in the day, Derek and I (Michael) used to work together at a movie theater and one of the topics that sparked our friendship was sports. From that moment, we would always talk and text about the recent news or exciting moments across all the major sports leagues. You can tell from our intense conversations that sports was a passion for us. We even made a deal to watch one another’s favorite sport, even though we weren’t the biggest fans of that sport at the time, to gain a better understanding of why we were so infatuated with that particular sport. And thus, that’s what we did and now we are both huge supporters of each other’s favorite sport. Since we would always hold these conversations, we would always joke about starting a podcast together to share our opinions with the world. Then, during the 2020 World Series, Derek and I were texting about the game and next thing you know, we started to really execute as to how to make this podcast a reality. Success wasn’t really a priority for us during the startup per say. We were really doing this for ourselves and with the conditions of the world at that time, we had a lot of time to really indulge in our ideas and have a vision of what we wanted. After some extensive research and planning, we thought it was time for us to begin our journey and that’s when Sportsaholic Podcast was created.

Michael & Derek, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

Derek is 27 years old and is currently going to school for film, while Michael is 25 and going to school for kinesiology. Together we provide a fun, light-hearted, and diverse sports podcast about baseball, football, soccer, and basketball. We aren’t only limited to sports by the way, we have a segment on our show called “After Dark” to discuss other topics such as music, food, and education to name a few. I think that is what sets us apart from other podcasters, we don’t confine ourselves to one certain topic, we venture out and ask our listeners what they would like to hear from us. Derek and I (Michael) are very proud of what we have accomplished so far. I think just putting ourselves out there and letting the world hear our opinions is a big deal to us since we are both shy, and to think that people from all around the world has listened to us and continue to come back still baffles the both of us to this day.

How did you build your audience on social media?

Building an audience on social media is one of the toughest parts to do. Social media is very quick and you have to really catch someone’s attention to reel them in. With that being said, the way we built our audience was through our graphics that we make. We take our time to make each graphic “attention grabbing” by carefully and purposely selecting certain colors, player images, and symbols. Another way we built our audience is by posting small audio snippets from our newly released episodes to show what we talk about during that certain episode, but to also get people to interact by having them comment their own opinion(s) on the post. The best advice we can give to build a social media presence is to just post and share amongst other accounts or users that have similar interests to the topic of your account.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?

There is! Of course we had already stated a goal of ours was to share our opinions with the world but the biggest mission we are trying to accomplish is to do this certain type of work as our career. Since we both have such a huge passion for sports, it would be an amazing opportunity if we could work for a big sporting network or work under different sports organizations. That is the ultimate dream for the both of us.
