We were lucky to catch up with Michael Deleaver recently and have shared our conversation below.
Michael, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
So if I was to start over today I would say I would of moved out of my home town and start over in a new place I always got told you should move to ATL or LA or NY you would grow more experience more with my craft but I was kind of nervous because I have a big clientele in my home town so I was nervous to just up and leave I would travel to ATL LA NYC a lot but to do a big move I was scared but knowing now I should of because I think I really would of got further in my career today
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hello my name is Michael Deleaver I’m 26 years old I’m from norristown pa outside of Philadelphia pa , I’m a young traveling celebrity hairstylist I started doing hair at a young age but as I got older and better I knew working in the industry was going to be my big move i watched hair shows and seeing different celebrity hairstylists and I would be like I wanna be like them one day Kim Kimble was my favorite when I was younger she motivated me a lot from her show , but I stopped doing hair for a wile in high school and college after I started getting back into hair and was traveling like crazy flying to different states to do hair I was always on the go netting different people going to different events it was amazing and then I started meeting people in the industry and started working with them going on tour , went to the VMAS going to different events that they would have but I wanted to do more then just hair I wanted to be a Actor as well and I was in 2 shows one Tyler Perry , and Cedric the entertainer it was amazing so as of today I’m still doing hair but taking my acting career further as well and one day be a big celebrity hairstylist or Actor
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I would say the best source for me was traveling my personality is amazing so I alway met other amazing people and social media is they key I would tell them or they either herd about me doing hair then I would pull out my phone and get their social media and then next thing you know they want their hair done and always word of mouth is key as well that was number 1 for me , when you do a good job at something you do people are going to talk so that was really major for me on clientele the most was word of mouth and still to this day it’s like that
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
How I build my social media is posting your hair video all the time do different trends like right now tik tok is really lit and reels on Instagram and that would really boost you social media fast it help me out a lot with followers and different I didn’t know that would drawl them in to wanting to get their hair done by me but before tik tok and reels I was just posting regular videos with music behind it and that got me far back then but you just have to stay consistent with it and always post even if it was in your story so that what helped me back then but now it’s way easier I wish they had reels and tik tok back then and cap cut I probably could get further myself then what I am now on social media.
