We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Michael D. Bowers. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Michael D. below.
Alright, Michael D. thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
You’re welcome! While I am absolutely happy as an artist and creative, there are certainly days where it can be challenging. I’m a highly creative person and my artistry is an outlet to express that creativity. That expression comes with heightened sensitivity, which can be overwhelming at times. Fortunately, working in corporate America since the age of sixteen has afforded me stability, and allows me the bandwidth to freely and actively engage in the creative aspects of music artistry. I guess you can say that I live in and experience the best of both worlds!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
You’re welcome, and sure! Well, I was born into a very musical family. With my Mom and Grandma being professional singers, I have very fond early memories of music always filling our home. Aside from that, I grew up singing in church and school choirs. I don’t think I’ll ever forget my first non-church solo performance. It was the 4th grade talent show at my school. I sang “If I Could” by Regina Belle. My Mom and I practiced for about 3 days and at the performance, I got 2 standing ovations. My Mom was so proud and excited, she ran down the aisle and gave me a big hug. That was when it really all started for me. Since then, I’ve gone on to do some pretty cool things, with some pretty cool people. Moving to Los Angeles was a pivotal step in my journey. What I’m MOST proud of is my forthcoming EP, “Studio 69”, which will be released at the top of the year!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
As a singer and artist, I love to give audiences something that they can feel, you know? We are in a time where people are feeling pretty numb to things. Desensitized, even. As such, my goal is to make sure that my music and live performances give a feeling of hope, excitement, relatability…SOMETHING! When I look at my audiences, I see me. When they look at me, I want them to see themselves. I want to inspire my listeners the same way that my idols inspired me. That’s what drives me, honestly. That’s my motivation.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The best way for society to support artists and creatives is to BUY THE ART!!! Streaming is nice, but the way that streaming is set up doesn’t benefit the artist. If you can’t financially support, you can support in other ways… reposting on social media, sharing with friends, playlisting music, etc. First and foremost, however, is purchasing. A lot of time and effort go into creating art. While it’s a labor of love, love doesn’t exactly pay the invoices for all of the aspects of recording and releasing music. Purchasing the art does. PURCHASE THE MUSIC!
