We were lucky to catch up with Michael Colon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Michael thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
Growing up in a single-parent household revealed many lessons. My Mother did everything and more to raise me the best way she could. Since my mom had to play two roles at a young age, I saw how serious life can get and how fast that happens. Although we were in challenging circumstances, victimizing ourselves was never an option. My mother always told me never to be a follower or see myself as a victim.
My mother had to balance being nurturing and tough on me because life would be anything but easy for us. I watched my mom work hard to support me and my siblings, so I knew I had to work hard at everything I tried to do. My mother had a zero-tolerance policy for getting into serious trouble or being lazy. My mother told me always to be myself and never a follower, to do the right thing, and to work hard.
Today, as a full-grown married man, I see and appreciate what was hard to understand growing up in a single-parent household as a boy. Although my motherhad to be tough with the love she gave me, the lessons in them shaped who I am today and how I approach anything I commit to in life.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Michael Colon born and raised in the northern part of the Bronx in New York. I come from a mixed background, with my parents being of Hispanic and Eastern European descendants, and I grew up in a melting pot of different walks of life at a young age. I always had a big imagination that I would often keep to myself while living within my thoughts rather than being outwardly expressive. My reasons at the beginning of my writing journey were to explore the depths of my soul and explore myself in that way. Now, I write in the hope that others will embrace themselves and the power of the imagination.
Creative writing took a timid and often hesitant boy to a man who wants to put out the colors of his heart as much as he can for people who need it. My services for my readers are honesty and deep, impactful messages in all my written pieces. My readers always appreciate authenticity. Whether writing a poem or book, I put my heart into each word where you can hear the author’s voice in a powerful way. If my writing can touch the reader’s hearts, I see that is the ultimate reward.
What sets me apart as a writer is my writing style. It is introspective, symbolic, poetic, and honest. My poetry and short story books, which I will be self-publishing this year, have the same qualities regardless of the topics. For all current and future readers of my work, I will never cheat anyone out of taking the time out of their days to read my art. My heart and soul will always be present in anything I write.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to reach a bigger audience with more significant projects I have ready to pitch. I want to have multiple full-length novels published by well-known publishing houses. I also want to keep building my portfolio of published pieces to sell my craft at a standard others can use in their own lives or continue to hire me for freelance work. The endless opportunities to touch the hearts of many drive me to continue on the path of creative writing.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being creative is making this already beautiful life so much more fun by blending my imagination into not it, thus manifesting works of art. Being an artist is both fun and hard work, which is what I love. The feeling of pouring your heart onto paper and doing the work to piece it together and get accepted is an amazing feeling of accomplishment and growth. The fruits of creative labor only make me want to work harder. Of course, the feedback I get from others and how my writing impacted them is as valuable as gold.
